Summary: AU. Kagome refuses to be cowed, and Naraku has an epiphany.

When they re-entered the classroom towards the end of lunch, they entered a room full of speculation and exploratory looks. Naraku glanced curiously at Kagome, but to give her credit, she kept her smiling face firmly in place under the weight of their stares. Walking to her desk she was the picture of self-possession and Naraku admired her for it. Apparently this strange woman bowed her head to no one.
When they had sat down she turned in her seat to talk to him and made him begrudgingly promise to meet her at the gates after school so that they could walk part of the way home.
The lesson began and Naraku realised that he wasn’t bored, he was resentful; the lesson had stolen moments that could have been shared with Kagome.
The realisation shocked him to his core.
