Crying

This was written for iy_themes for the prompt mist and placed third. Unfortunately due to a lack of participation the community is shutting down, but it was fun while it lasted, thanks for providing me with another place to write!

Title: Crying
Author: aimee_blue
Prompt: Mist
Genre: Introspection
Words: 386
Summary: CU. Byakuya is confused and Kanna and Kagura offer insight.

Byakuya opened his eyes, and opened them again.

I can’t see anything... interesting.

Lifting a hand so that he might look at it, he pursed his lips when he realised that this cloying mist was also impenetrable. It pressed down on his shoulders heavily as though it wanted to drown him.

This mist... is not normal.

Was this how the victims of his illusions felt when they knew they had been trapped? Except he doubted that, they were always desperate to escape the illusions, but he felt no pressing need to hurry from the mist. This felt like a reprieve.

This place is much better than Naraku’s presence, sad but not cruel...

Blind eyes darted uselessly through the pressing fog that embraced him chillingly.

Natural curiosity piquing, he wandered through the fog aimlessly.

Where am I?

“Boo.”

“Kagura,” Byakuya muttered, feeling the whisper of her lips at his ear and the whistle of her wind as it toyed with his hair. “Am I dead?”

Kagura laughed, the sound echoing hollowly in the fog. “You wish.”

Did he? Byakuya wondered morosely.

“This is your soul.”

My soul? I have a soul?

“Exactly... it’s kind of creepy. Just like you.”

Cold. Lonely. Uncaring. And just a little bit mocking.

Byakuya laughed and tilted his face upwards. “If this is my soul, why are you here Kagura? I’d much rather have conjured up Sesshoumaru.”

Kagura snorted. “I doubt he’d ever be accommodating enough to appear just because you wanted him too, even if you are in your own soul.”

She was probably right. “Boring,” he sighed, “so why do I need to see my soul?”

“You can’t see the soul for the mist,” she corrected haughtily.

Icy fingers ran along his spine, curled around his neck, tugged at his hair. The mist is... lonely?

“You are lonely.”

I am lonely?

Byakuya frowned.

I want... I want...

Byakuya opened his eyes and opened them again. Kanna, sat opposite him vacantly, blinked at his sudden return to the waking world.

“Ne, Kanna,” he muttered, rubbing the back of his head tiredly, “can you see my soul?”

Kanna’s fingers clenched around her mirror and she whispered, “It’s crying.”

Byakuya’s voice cracked as he laughed. “I know.”

“Kagura’s... was the same. Will you betray him like she did?” Kanna asked hollowly.

Will I?
