Summary: Bokensou is pleasantly surprised.
It tickled.
Droopy eyes opened wearily to half-mast as Bokensou returned grudgingly to the land of the wakeful. There was something scampering through his roots, he realised groggily as he ruffled his boughs woodenly and rustled his leaves in a bid for alertness.
The something was definitely not a squirrel though; it felt more like a child. Peering around his dell curiously, Bokensou spotted the one responsible for his disturbed sleep and smiled creakily.
Children had become less and less frequent visitors to his hidey-hole in the last five hundred years, mayhap the pathway leading into his part of the forest had become less travelled. So this child in the brightly chequered kimono, who ran across his roots barefoot with her arms extended to afford her balance was welcome. Though she was a new face, her scent carried subtle undertones of the familiar. Then, an imp with an attitude problem and a staff that was precariously top-heavy ran after the carefree child, squawking indignantly.
“Sesshoumaru-sama,” Bokensou greeted.
The white-clad immaculately-presented demon stepped from the shadows and nodded curtly to the old tree who smiled warmly. “You have grown, as all things must.”
The girl in question had stopped running and was staring, mouth agape, eyes wide with wonder, at his wrinkled wooden face.
“Hn.”
“Taciturn as ever,” Bokensou needled.
“Tree-san,” the girl called cautiously, “do you know Sesshoumaru-sama?”
The old tree blinked, pleasantly surprised at her first choice of question. Surely most children would have asked how a tree had come to talk.
“Since he was a pup,” Bokensou confided.
“Really?” Rin’s eyes became starry, “Could you please tell me what Sesshoumaru-sama was like?”
The patient yet chagrined look on Sesshoumaru’s face made Bokensou chuckle. It seems you have grown emotionally too, young one.
“I could tell you stories...”
