Psychology: Flonne is, as Laharl so aptly puts it, a ‘love freak.’ Flonne is obsessed with love, friendship, hope, kindness and everything under the sun that involve joy and the heart. She’s passionate about it, considering herself a defender of love and peace and as such she delivers justice in the name of love. She‘s quite enthusiastic about everything she does, really, which just feeds into her love frenzies. It’s just about the only thing she thinks about and the happiness of those around her is her daily pursuit. She insists that love is the most pure and wonderful thing in the world and that everyone has love in their hearts, no matter how evil and dark they seem. She honestly thinks her goals can be reached and will not back down. One could say she’s the stereotype of everything from kittens to puppies to rainbows.

She’s also very innocent and naïve, which is no doubt unsurprising, but despite this she generally knows what she’s talking about. In fact even though she insists everyone has some good in them, this is influenced by the teachings of Seraph Lamington, who taught her that good and evil don’t truly exist and that everyone is capable of them. What this really has done is just reinforce her beliefs and make them seem closer. This also means that while evil bothers her and she’ll try to stop it, she’ll also try to focus her energies on saving that evil person.

That being said, she’s extremely sensitive. One could say she’s highly empathetic, which means that she’s liable to cry at sad stories and in fact will cry even if the person its effecting doesn‘t cry. She worries over her friends and is very loyal to them. For all her talk on peace, if she most resort to battle, she will do so without holding back. Still, Flonne is outgoing and cheerful, a “friend of everyone” sort. Sometimes she’s a bit flighty and has random ideas but she means well.

However, her time in the demon world has, in some ways at least, toughened her up. She wants to be a proper Vassal to Laharl, so there’s some dirty work involved and while she is 99% of the time a pacifist, she will kill if she must and won’t hold back in a fight. She’s used to the demon way of love and friendship now - like when Etna teasingly chokes her - and even gets excited when heroes appear to challenge the Overlord. Because good versus evil battles are awesome no matter what side you’re on! As Etna points out, there are times when Flonne acts like a very good demon.

Oh and she’s definitely not a cook, so don’t try her food.

Other Skills/Abilities: Flonne, as an angel, wields holy magic. Her primary healing spell is Power of Love and her best specials are Divine Ray and Holy Arrows, both energy shot based attacks. She also fights with a bow and arrow and sometimes a staff. (She also probably knows the elemental spells as well).

Other Weaknesses: She’s tougher than most but she can be killed. Easily, really, as she’s the weakest of the main trio. Her focus is on healing and support, so her offensive skills can be lacking.

History: Flonne grew up in Celestia, a Heaven-like realm where Angels live and which is possibly out in outer space somewhere. Or in another universe. Or something. Anyway. She has a younger sister and caring parents who taught her the ways of love and friendship. She’s spent most of her life as an angel trainee under the Seraph Lamington, whom she idolizes to a possibly worrying extent. She even uses a “-sama” honorific for him and only him. Although the Seraph had a special plan for her as he taught her, Flonne was completely unaware (as usual) and spent her uneventful days training and supporting the cause for love and peace.

One day, however, she was sent on an assassination mission to the Netherworld to kill the Overlord. She was nervous and quite confused as to why she would be chosen but determined to do her best. Imagine her surprise when upon arriving to the Netherworld, she found out the king had been dead for some time. Unsure of what to do, having promised to return home after her success, Flonne decided to stay in the Netherworld with the prince, Laharl. Well, for the most part. Her decision was cemented after discovering demons didn’t believe in love. It gave her a new goal: To discover if demons really could love. Laharl decided to humour her by letting her stay around as his vassal.

Flonne watched Laharl carefully in their time together for hints of kindness. The first one she saw when Laharl spared the life of a rival who was shown to have a son that depended on him. He even like his rival keep enough wealth to support his family. Another time, Flonne lost her pendent and Laharl helped get it back, even diving into lava to retrieve it. Shortly after this event, Etna betrayed them in an effort to get back her memories. Laharl could have killed her but instead the two bonded. Flonne grew more and more curious and confused by demon love by the day yet she pressed on to discover more. She was convinced Laharl was changing.

She also found herself changing as well. Flonne went so far as to help battle challengers to the throne until Laharl was the last one, thus making him the official Overlord. It’s treason by Celestia’s standards and quite worrying for an angel. But she refused to end her self-given mission, even knowing the Angels were upset with her, because she knew her love quest was important.

A crucial moment in Flonne’s own development was learning the story of Laharl’s mother’s sacrifice. She realized that she was being single-minded in how she viewed love and decided to try to see love from the viewpoints of others as well and be considerate of their feelings. She understood, then, that Laharl had his own reasons for hating love.

Then, almost randomly, the Defenders of Earth - Captain Gordon, Jennifer and Thursday the robot - crashed into the Netherworld. They too were sent to kill the Overlord but after being defeated by Laharl, became his vassals instead. They proved their worth but also their reluctant friendship. They were even asked to live in the Netherworld, which they accepted. Flonne decided then that the most important thing was to find a way to allow all demons, angels and humans to live together in harmony, just as she did.

Yet after this was done, they found out that actually Gordon had been used. Earth was invading the Netherworld and had needed to find a secure route, using Gordon as the scouting party. After a long battle to stop the invasion fleet, the group discovered that the space fleet had been aided by none other than the Angels. Flonne was shocked and distraught and quickly decided she had to return to Celestia to speak with the Seraph. Her worried friends decided to accompany her.

While they made it to Celestia all right, Flonne was quickly deemed a traitor and sentenced to execution. She did the only thing she could do and fought back, sealing her guilty sentence They discovered as they fought that Vulcanis the arch angel was behind the plot and plead with the Seraph to stop Vulcanis before he started a universal war. The Seraph, naturally, punished the arch angel for his crimes by turning him into a rose. However, he also needed to take care of the invading group. Or at least Flonne, the angel who sinned. As Flonne’s punishment for fighting her own people she was turned into a flower and her fate was put into Laharl’s hands. Laharl was overcome with grief and threatened to kill the Seraph but decided to lay down his arms, as Flonne would have wanted. In return for such an action, Flonne was brought back as a Fallen Angel, her real punishment.

As a Fallen Angel she was allowed to stay by Laharl’s side. Encouraged to, even. She was told that she and Laharl would form a knot that would bind Celestia and the Netherworld together again, not that Flonne really gets that. But now she can finally live with her friends in peace. This was the work of both the Seraph and Laharl’s father.

Current Story Point: Sometime between Disgaea 1 and 2, basically post game before all the silly side adventures.

Reality Description: The Netherworld is Flonne’s home now and it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s a dimension that exists separate from other ones - which I’ll get to - and is basically the Disgaea version of Hell. In fact, Hell is the currency, though it‘s more of a Hell-like place than a real Hell. As such, it is generally a dark and fiery place with less than savory characters lurking around. The demons of the Netherworld are crafty and backstabbing, because that’s how demons are raised to be. Things are actually all a bit stereotypical down there. A demon child is a lucky child if they own a zombie and many have fond memories of making their own zombies or killing a new kid‘s pet. Good folks.

Money makes the Netherworld go ‘round and most demons are greedy and obsessed with wealth and power. Many even fancy themselves potential Overlords, though few would be foolish enough to try. They live in a monarchy of sorts under Overlord Laharl, Flonne‘s best friend and sort of love interest (they are The Knot). Flonne currently lives as Laharl’s vassal in his massive palace, which is surrounded by lava and carved out of the rocks. Her other good friend, Etna, also lives with them as lahars’ vassal and is constantly threatening to take Laharl’s throne, a challenge he welcomes and complains about. Demons are weird.

Other features of note is that the demons do have a Dark Assembly, which are Senators who decide the affairs of the Netherworld and open levels. They have shopping centers with everything a hero/villain needs, hospitals with all the best spell casters and a dimension gate keeper to allow them to cross into other areas at will, which vary drastically from lava fields to forests to tundra. It’s also a modern place with TVs, playstations and more.

The opposite of the Netherworld is Flonne’s home world of Celestia. If the Netherworld is like hell, then Celestia is like heaven. The Angels live there in peace and it’s a place of great beauty, with bright lights, gardens and clouds. Flonne is kind of exiled though, so she won’t be here much. But like the Netherworld, it is its own place. It is also home to Flonne’s family and Seraph Lamington, Flonne’s much beloved mentor.

The Human World, meanwhile, is where the humans live. It seems to be more advanced than modern times, with space heroes and A.I. robots making trips into the far reaches of outer space. It has a sort of comic book sci-fi feel to it in that sense. They are also aware - or at least some of them are - of Celestia and the Netherworld.

Prinnies exist in the Netherworld and Celestia. They are souls who sinned in life and in death were put into the bodies of exploding penguins to work off their debts. Yes, exploding penguins. They explode. In the Netherworld, salvation means gathering cash. In Celestia, it means doing chores and cleaning and generally being nice and helpful. Eventually they are allowed to be reborn again.

There are also numerous alternate dimensions and alternate Netherworlds ruled by their own Overlords. Sometimes these Overlords challenge each other to take each other’s dimension. They can be accessed at will.

Another note is that Disgaea has canon fourth wall breaks. They are aware of their roles in the game, of their levels, stats, equipment, etc. They will sometimes make meta comments about themselves and their world but outside of that, they don’t usually break other people’s walls.
