Some days in the life of Leah Ross are better than others, but they're all boring. Somedays she just explores thoroughly every place she hasn't tried yet, others it's more desperate ( Read more... )

Here's the thing about the Winchesters: when you have a goal to work toward but that goal doesn't have a perceivable end at the moment, it's all right to get a little sidetracked so long as it falls under "hunt things" and "save people."

With that said, after getting his car and fixing it up, the first thing Sam did was fill the trunk with as many real and makeshift weapons as he could.

And with that said, after he catches sight of the building and the crowds of zombies, he parks his car safely around the corner and comes back.

Leah's first clue will be the soft hiss of gas and the FWOOM! of a makeshift flamethrower.

Also, screaming zombies.

That's clue enough.

The door downstairs appears to have held so far - though it sounds like it might give in seconds - but Leah still has a way to go on getting her radio two way transmitting. The gas, flamethrower and screaming, that gets her attention.

She scrambles up to her feet and makes her way to the window in a few confident steps, throwing it open, and screaming angrily into the air.

The zombies below her resume their surging her way.

"Oh, man."

Not that he hadn't guessed there was someone inside from the surging zombies, but now it's a screaming somebody. Sam groans, worried, and grabs a few more gas cans from the trunk to tuck into his belt.

It's slow going, getting toward the house, and full of screaming remains of people that he has to dodge (how do you even become a zombie? have they ever even run into real zombies before?).

"HEY! HEY, I'M COMING, IT'LL BE OKAY!"

Having caught her breath from the first initial scream, Leah points a hand down and around, towards the front of the shop. She's not facing Sam, of course, having no idea where he is, but her sense of direction is such that she can approximate the direction of the door.

"AROUND THE FRONT!" She yells out. "GROUND FLOOR!"

She'll meet him there, she hopes. But first she needs to pull away from the window and find her project.

"GOT IT!"

There's a fleeting flash of guilt when one of the figures that goes down has a real face. But it really is just fleeting - this isn't like the town with the demon disease, this is rotten (and gooey) walking corpses.

Which are being set on fire as fast as possible while he works his way toward the door.

Oh god. Someone who sounds competant. A real life human who can fight and is fighting and -

Leah doesn't waste too much time with relief. She finds her table and throws her work into a box, tucking that under her arm as she stumbles down the stairs, focused mostly on not falling down.

When she reaches the bottom, she hears the door crash in, and lifts up her cane in readiness to fight them back again.

"Come on!" Sam shouts, turning his back on Leah to point the flamethrower out. "Stay right at my back, we're gonna run, okay?"

Quickly, and over a growing pile of flaming bodies.

"We're not going to run," Leah informs him firmly. She does move towards his voice, cane out at ankle height to try and find him.

"I'm blind. If I run, I'll fall. Please tell me you have transport."

Sam glances back sharply and just now catches sight of her eyes.

"Oh, crap." The zombies get another dose of fire while he thinks about this. He needs both hands for the flamethrower and isn't sure how Leah would take being carried anyway.

Looking over at Leah again, Sam misses a zombie that manages to fight it's way through until it roars. He shoves the kerosene and lighter into Leah's hands and knocks it down with a punch - though he's not sure it'll last long.

"Can you work a flamethrower all right?"

When something's being thrust into her hand, Leah presses a button on her cane, and ziiiiip it contracts into an eight inch stick on her belt. The box under her arm, she nudges back.

"Don't lose this," she warns, but then she uses both hands to arrange the can and lighter, and grins in clear relief.

"Oh man, you're now my favourite. Get behind me."

As soon as he does, she's letting fly. "Tell me you have transport."

"I have a car down the street and around the corner," Sam reports, grinning a little to see her so calm. It's a change and a definite welcome one.

He pulls another gas can from his belt and a lighter from his pocket, putting his back against Leah's. "Sweep side to side, slow steps forward. I'll try to watch out on your side, too, all right? Let's go!"

"Got it."

Leah grins, after a sniff betrays a rather stuffed nose. She lifts up her flame thrower and operates in smooth, careful sweeps that betray that yes, she's done this before.

"Gonna have to keep my pace here, sorry. Give me clock directions, I'm twelve."

It's such a relief to have someone competent, she could hug him.

Hopefully she'll wait until she's not holding a flamethrower to do any hugging.

Sam grins to hear her request clock directions, nodding as he puts his back to her and they start moving slowly out the door. "You get nine to three, clockwise, I'll handle the rest. The car's about half a mile forward."

"Brilliant."

Another sniff, and she starts forward, arcing exactly between nine and three, taking slow, but decent sized steps in the direction he's going.

Under the screaming of the zombies, she realises she's beginning to laugh, and bites it down.

"We're in Germany right? Your car's a left hand drive?"

Sweeping his own weapon in a semi-circle, Sam makes sure his steps match hers to stay directly behind, taking down any of the zombies her initial arc had missed. "Yeah, that's right. Once we're out of the big group, we can probably just make a run for it. They don't spread as far as where I parked."

There also aren't nearly as many of them still upright as there had been. Sam doubts that even the ones still writhing on the ground will be able to get to their feet for an attack any time soon.

"Got it," Leah says. It's not the talking that distracts her, but just bad luck that she misteps a few seconds later,. treading into one of the writhing bodies and stumbling forward. She drops the can as she does so.

"Fuck."
