Picture a road in desperate need of repair - riddled with potholes and no smooth edges. Then take a bit of tracing paper and shade. When you hold it up to Rebekah's account of how her family turned, you would find that they fit perfectly, hold it up to the last episode, you'll also find that perfect fit.
It's not that I didn't enjoy the episodes - "Ordinary People" or "Homecoming" - I just feel that there's a whole lot missing from what we were given, and why it will (at least I hope it will) come to light later. This is my first post like this so bear with me. Considering Downton Abbey has ended (so beautifully) I need to have something to tide me over until September.
First I'll start with the discovery of the names of the Originals on the wall of the cave. Now, there was really no doubt in my mind that Mikael was not the Papa of the Original Vampire family, most of the fans had been speculating for weeks as to who he was, and we were proved right at the beginning of the episode. As Rebekah tells her story, we see them in 11th century Mystic Falls trying to make their own way and start fresh from disease ridden Europe. Trouble starts when the youngest son is mauled by one of the werewolves in the village, and desperate parents seek help from a witch in order to spare their children. The witch refuses, so Esther decides to take things into her own hands. This is where things stop making sense, and the audience scratched their heads in confusion - "She's a witch?"
Remember this?
This necklace. The same necklace Elena wore all along, which a few episodes earlier they discovered belonged to the 'Original Witch'. The same necklace that Rebekah seems to fall in love with but burns her when she touches it. Also the very same one that her mother ends up wearing later in this episode? So, what I'd like to know is how she got it. It isn't destroyed by fire, and obviously its owner has an axe to grind with a certain Niklaus, but I'll get to that later.
So Mum's a witch. Yet she doesn't appear to wield the amount of power given to her title of the 'Original Witch'. No, Esther pales in comparison. The good people of TVD Message boards are of this opinion and I happen to agree with them. What changed? I thought it would've been the village witch they went to in the first place.
You know....her.
We fast forward to when it is discovered that Klaus is not Mikael's son. In Rebekah's account, she states that her father drove his sword through his wife's heart, and killed her - she betrayed him. Because he hates Klaus so much, he's hunting him down to kill him too. But this, also didn't make sense - certainly not to Elena when she heard it. She went away to study the drawings again, only to find that what she was told doesn't match with what she saw. As it happened, Klaus was the one to kill his mother, and Mikael found out. That's the only reason why he is hunting him down. But it isn't clear what happens to Mikael after he found out that his wife had been murdered. His presence in the story disappeared completely. If he wanted to kill Klaus after killing his wife, why not do it then and there? Why did his story abruptly end there?
It is convenient that Klaus is the one to report all this to his sister and the rest of his siblings in a twisted way, so that they band together against their father. But why then did Klaus eventually stake them all and keeps them close to him at all times. Did they eventually find out the truth?
Back to the Original Witch and her necklace.
In 2x08, we meet Elijah for the first time. His reaction to Elena wearing his mother's necklace as I think about it now, was as if he hadn't seen it before, and it was simply an insignificant piece of jewellery. Perhaps it wasn't very important then to the plot, and he's the sort of character that doesn't give anything away. But still.... Then almost a year later, Rebekah's reaction is the complete opposite - she flips out.
Other mentions of this witch have been, namely in conversations with Klaus and Rebekah.
Klaus to Rebekah: "And we know how much she hated me."
Really? Does it still stand then that their mother was the witch? She seemed to defend him when Mikael was being unfair, but did she really hate her son? Did she see him as a living, breathing reminder of her betrayal to her husband who loved her so much, that he spent the last millennium hunting down her killer? Some people think the reason he killed her is because she put the curse on him, that he would never waken his dormant side. I don't think she hated him, there isn't enough evidence to say that she did. I think she was trying to protect everyone else, and perhaps even him.
There were several things in this episode (Ordinary People) which did not add up, and I suspect having it in Rebekah's perspective was part of the reason why. As for the drawings on the wall, we saw two of the siblings writing them up there, and one of them questioned the secrecy of it. Later, when the family was divided, who completed them? Was it Klaus, the other witch, or someone else? A conversation between Klaus and Rebekah stood out to me in the beginning of the episode when they drew the runes on the wall of the cave.
Rebekah: Do you think Father knows about this?
Klaus: Father always knows.
Rebekah: That's because you always tell him.
That's it for now. Stay tuned for part two where I'll rant about coffins, Katherine's agenda, and Mikael's 'death' :) [Screencaps from:
