Fading Lights

He sat alone, in the dark, the blinds were drawn, the lights were off. He closed his eyes. Visions of Amber, calling for him, reaching for him, then slowly fading away. Patients, , young and old, the ones he couldn’t help, the ones for whom there was no hope., fading away too, till they were lost forever. Then he could see those eyes, like they were that day, worn and faded and lost.

Wilson opened his eyes, but it didn’t help. Everything was dark, but he could still see those eyes, dim lights that he kept reaching for, he could still see that face, so familiar, yet so far away..

He took a sip of his drink. Whiskey. Beer didn’t work anymore.

He still could those eyes, staring at him, glaring at him, haunting him.

“I met someone” House had told him.

“In here?” he had asked.

“In here.”

Those eyes kept staring at him, watching him, waiting for his shock.

“Maybe I won’t even need you anymore”

He remembered the pain that he felt, deep in his heart, like none he had ever felt before.

“Maybe I won’t even need you anymore.”

He remembered staring at those eyes, looking for the laugh, looking for the smile.

But there was none. Just the haunted eyes, looking at him, but not seeming him at all.

Now he was sitting all alone, in the dark, with all the light fading away.

He drank some more whiskey, then he reached for the pills. The pills that he kept secret from everyone, even from himself. He took two, then he took three more. Then he drank some more too.

And he sat in the dark, alone, with the very last of the light, the light of those eyes, fading away. There was nothing left.
