Clandestine ~
Donghae thought that this was all too much. He had been known as quite a patient man - be it in practicing dances, or his temperament altogether. One would think that Lee Donghae didn’t have anger issues - what with the ever present smile gracing his delicate face, his features schooled into a mask of perfection and beauty. What people failed to consider is that Lee Donghae was human too. And no matter how strong one’s self-control is, just like any other human, he will have had to have a breaking point as well.
Donghae knew he would’ve heeded Hyukjae’s advice and stopped visiting their fan cafés a long time ago. It was a habit of his roommate Leeteuk, that rubbed off on him, and it hadn’t left him ever since he learned the words: ELFish.cc. He was very well aware of the fact that fans paired them with each other - they made it blatant enough through their humongous placards in concerts and whatnot. He even read a fan fiction or two, just for curiosity’s sake. It was quite amusing, really. And Donghae has got to give props to the fans’ imaginations. How an insect bite on his neck came to be a hickey resulting from a rough night of angry sex with Hyukjae in the practice room, made it into their fans’ minds, was beyond him. And Hyukjae of all people? That’d be like… fucking his own brother. Although he heard that there were incest fics as well. Just…no.
Nonetheless, Donghae is a sport. All he knew was that he wants to make his fans happy. And if fan service was what tickled their fantasies, then so be it. After all, didn’t they say that the ‘customer’ is always right?
He never really understood what Hyukjae meant by him getting hurt someday by something he might read in the discussion threads. What could possibly go wrong, right? The fan site provided him with good quality photos which he uploads to his twitter every once in a while. Also, the comment box was always filled with praises and compliments on his acting, singing, dancing, and well, just him in general. It was an ego booster, to say the least. Donghae needed it, no matter how perfect others may see him as. Sometimes, a simple “I love you oppa” could lift his spirits and he’d be energetic due to such words, no matter how tired he was. As for antis, Donghae had been in the industry for far too long to take the insults to heart. And besides, all of them seemed superficial. Nothing Donghae couldn’t shrug off and ignore. After all, nobody really hated Lee Donghae. EVERYBODY LOVES DONGHAE OKAY
Whatever the fans wrote, may it be their dislike for his hair color or their view on the latest episode of his drama, Donghae considered as motivation. He could very well say that he was being sensible about everything he read… until he came across a certain fan account about how Kyuhyun’s dad acknowledged KyuMin.
Donghae has had enough the moment he read the one line that made his insides churn - ears turning beet red as he felt his blood pressure rise with every beat of his heart.
He was adamant about the pairings at first. Sure, he was paired at least once with every member in the group, and he really didn’t mind at first. The thing is, some ‘couples’ grew popular to the point that the management itself started to put them up to performing fan service with their own ‘respective’ couples. What ticked him off was that his very own boyfriend was paired with someone else. Nevertheless, Donghae got used to it. Hyukjae was his best friend so he wasn’t really that bothered about the skin ship. It was fine as long as nobody got hurt. He was being very mature about this. He didn’t see the point of being upset over something so trivial.
Then again, when genuine feelings were involved, one can’t help but mix personal emotions in work circumstances. Donghae didn’t know when he had started to act childish - not that he’d ever admit that to himself or the members though. He knew that fan service was just that. He does it himself - everybody does it. Everybody - including his boyfriend Sungmin.
Donghae was a patient person. Then again, the patient ones are those that people should be afraid of, for when the time comes that they finally reach their limit, there will surely be an explosion. Pent up emotions are dangerous after all.
He could very well remember how he let the incident in China pass. He was filming Skip Beat with Siwon, and what little break time he had, he spent catching up on sleep. He had seen the tweets of those left in the dorms. Hyukjae, Kyuhyun, and Sungmin… his Sungmin, were playing games. Not that Donghae was jealous, because he was not. He was even glad that Sungmin found great company in their other members when Donghae couldn’t be there to take care of him. He even shrugged off the way Sungmin back hugged Kyuhyun as they declared each other as perfect boyfriends on one particular TV show, that Donghae missed once again. It was just fan service, that’s all.
Donghae didn’t even bat an eyelash when Sungmin uploaded his selca with Kyuhyun on his naver blog. It was just for the fans. Never mind that Sungmin never posted anything remotely related to him. Perhaps he was just protecting their relationship, Donghae thought.
Whenever they bowed after every performance, Donghae wished it was him beside Sungmin; to be able to hold his boyfriend’s hand in front of their fans at the end of their performance would be a dream come true for him. Instead, he goes to Hyukjae’s side as Kyuhyun reaches for Sungmin’s hand. Management’s orders - nothing else can be done.
Donghae did scowl a little when he learned that Sungmin and Kyuhyun were together, once again, in their musical MT for one whole weekend, thanks to the fan base again. He saw how close those two seemed to be. But then again, they were roommates, so Donghae just pushed it to the back of his mind; they were under the same company for their musicals after all. Speaking of musical, he continued to ignore all the KyuMin updates he came across; including the picture of Kyuhyun and Sungmin backstage when Sungmin came to see the maknae’s musical. It was just for moral support, that’s all.
And seriously, what was it with the hand holding? As he monitored the SJ-M shows he had missed, he had lost count of the number of times Kyuhyun and Sungmin held each other’s hands. What he was most jealous of was when they did it when they were exploring the night markets in Taiwan. They seriously looked like an old married couple wandering the streets. How he wished that he'd be in Kyuhyun’s place instead.
He knew he told Kyuhyun to take care of Sungmin whenever he wasn’t around, but did the brat really have to hold his hands that much? Sungmin was not a baby, no matter how much he looked like it. And the airport incident; he even held himself back from going up to walk beside Sungmin, yet Kyuhyun had the audacity to call him to sidle up to him!? "Sungmin-hyung" his face. Sungmin doesn’t even let Donghae call him hyung, he thought bitterly.
Then again, of all the pretending he had to do, he concedes that acting on stage was the most difficult. No words can explain how much it had hurt him when he saw Sungmin looking into Kyuhyun’s eyes as they sang words of love. Isn’t he supposed to be Sungmin’s boyfriend and not Kyuhyun? He felt his heart constrict as he saw Sungmin smile at Kyuhyun and vice versa - willing himself not to cry as he continued to sing, his voice shaky. He knew he had to endure somehow. Besides, the peck Sungmin gave on his cheek once they got backstage gave him reassurance.
But now, he wasn’t so sure anymore.
Ever since Sungmin had started Sukira, the limited time he got to spend with his boyfriend had gone from sparse to basically non-existent. What little time off Sungmin got had been spent on sleeping, and their day-offs never did coincide - Donghae needing to fly to Taiwan every so often for the promotion of Skip Beat and various commercial shootings.
Finally, he got to spend time with his beloved once again when they filmed for the Kyochon CF. He was feeling giddy at the prospect of being able to goof around with his lover - and it’s a plus that Kyuhyun was in Manila at the time. Don’t get him wrong, he didn’t hate Kyuhyun. In fact, he was quite fond of the maknae - envious even, of his quick wit that is. He wondered if Sungmin could possibly fall for Kyuhyun due to this, which was why he tried his best to improve his speaking skills, but failed miserably.
Hyukjae had given him pointers - a lot of them actually - but none had work. He was disappointed, to say the least. And as if the disapproving look from the PD as they had to retake scenes due to his fail humor wasn’t enough, Sungmin’s pout just had to haunt him on top of that. The latter seemed to bother him more though, So, yes, Donghae was indeed excited that he gets to spend his day with Sungmin - only to be disappointed when Sungmin only played with Shindong.
Still, Donghae kept silent. He didn’t want to confront Sungmin lest the other confirmed his worst fears. He hoped that the issue resolved itself, but at the back of his mind, he knew that if he wanted to save their relationship, they had to talk somehow.
Donghae continued to be an avid listener of the radio program Sukira despite the change of DJs. How could he not when it was his boyfriend who was talking. It pains him to realize that it’s only through the radio that he could hear his boyfriend’s voice nowadays. Did one-line texts count as communication, anyway?
Another opportunity presented itself when the four of them - Kyuhyun, Hyukjae, Sungmin and him got casted as Fighting Junior in We Got Married. He expected things to look up from there - at least they got to be together. He was determined to gain back Sungmin’s affection. What he failed to take into consideration though, was that Kyuhyun would be there too. And what do you know? He was to sit beside Hyukjae. Of fucking course.
Still, Donghae couldn’t say that he didn’t enjoy the show. The teamwork between Hyukjae and Leeteuk was still evident, and if you add Kyuhyun’s sarcasm, it was definitely a hit.
When Donghae looks back, he knew he couldn’t blame himself. Jealousy, after all, was innate in all humans - but control is too, so that’s what he did. He didn’t think he’d ever reach a boiling point but surprisingly, it came with a revenge.
~
It was one late afternoon after they ended a particular taping of We Got Married. They were asked about their ideal girls. Of course, Donghae had to laugh at how generic their answers seemed to be. It was like their answers were programmed to be spoken whenever that query arose. He was amused to hear how Hyukjae had remarked that Sungmin should have a girlfriend who was just 130 cm in height, so he could hug her. His smile, however, faltered, when he saw Kyuhyun adjusting the scarf on Sungmin’s neck. The two seemed to be wrapped up in their own world. The way Sungmin smacked Kyuhyun lightly on the arm seemed so natural that if Donghae didn’t know better, he would’ve easily mistaken them for lovers. Or are they, really? Donghae shook his head. He didn’t want to think about it.
He knew he had to talk to Sungmin somehow. As he was about to enter their assigned dressing room, he heard a scream that was undoubtedly Sungmin’s voice. He was about to rush in when he heard another voice reply - the voice of the person he really didn’t want to deal with right now.
“Are you okay!?”
“Yes... hnggg... I’m fine. It kinda hurts though.”
“But why? I thought you did this with Donghae a lot of times before?”
“Well. Yes. But in case you haven’t noticed, Hae and I haven’t really spent time together lately.”
“Oh yeah. I guess he’s been too busy to see that you need this now.”
“Yeah. But I don’t wanna bother him. I don’t want to seem like a needy boyfriend or something.”
“And yet you’re bothering me? I, your innocent roommate, is doing things for you which your boyfriend ought to be responsible for?”
“Oh please. It’s not like you don’t enjoy it.”
“That’s quite true. So, can I proceed? The tightness is killing me. Geez, are you sure you’ve done this before? Loosen up, will you?”
“Shut up maknae. Just get on with it but don’t be so har---ahhh---Kyu!”
“What!?”
“Be gentle! Do it slowly! I really haven’t done this in months.”
“God, you’re so whiny for a man.”
“And you’re such a brat.”
“I am your brat.”
“Of course. But seriously Kyu, tone it down. It really hurts. Why can’t you be like Donghae and be gentle.”
“I am not Donghae. I am Kyuhyun. Seriously hyung, you need to stop bringing your boyfriend into this or I’m gonna stop.”
“No. Please don’t, Kyu. You know I need this. I need you.”
“So stop whining!”
“Okay but keep quiet. Someone might hear.”
“I’m not the one who’s complaining like a silly girl.”
“Fine! Just---aaah---ouch!”
Donghae couldn’t take it any longer. He barged through the door, which was surprisingly open. What the hell were they thinking? What if someone walked in on them? What if Donghae walked in on them?
He was, however, rooted on his spot by the door when he saw Sungmin lying on the couch with Kyuhyun hovering above him - the maknae sitting on his chest. Sungmin’s hands held Kyuhyun’s wrists in an iron grip while the maknae was attempting to stick something that oddly looked like a needle on Sungmin’s face. At least they were fully clothed, Donghae thought.
Kyuhyun recovered first and pulled himself away from Sungmin. He hastily strode through the door and gave the couple privacy - but not before mouthing a "hwaiting" to Sungmin behind Donghae’s back.
“I--- What was that!?” Donghae mouthed, an incredulous look on his face.
“Hae baby. It’s not what you think it is.” Sungmin pulled himself up to a sitting position - wincing whenever he pulled a needle out of his face.
“What do you think am I thinking, huh? Min, are you cheating on me?” Donghae finally managed to move so that he was now in front of Sungmin, who was lounging on the couch.
“No! No babe! Of course not!” Sungmin hurriedly stood up - flailing his arms, denying the accusation with his whole body - both stepping back as their noses bumped in Sungmin’s haste to explain.
Donghae was rubbing his nose which had gone sore from the collision - keeping himself from smiling at the cute sight of Sungmin who was doing the same thing - a pout on his pretty lips. Sungmin, however, quickly recovered and checked on Donghae.
“Hae! Baby. Are you all right? Does it hurt? I’m so sorry! I didn’t---”
Sungmin was silenced when a pair of soft lips landed on his. He felt his eyes close as Donghae coaxed his mouth open with his tongue - reveling in the feeling that he had missed so much, their hectic schedules confining them to having no more than mere pecks here and there. Donghae momentarily forgot his upset. How he seriously survived such a long time without having Sungmin was beyond him. He tightened his hold on Sungmin’s waist - immersing himself in the warmth that was Sungmin. Donghae finds that the warmth Sungmin provided was enough to make him forget everything that had transpired within the past months.
Both panted as they broke from the kiss, chests heaving as Donghae brought their foreheads together.
“I don’t want to know. I don’t need to know. All I know is that I love you and I’m willing to forgive whatever you did. You’re mine, Min. You’re not allowed to leave me. Stay with me. I don’t know how I’ll be able to continue living if you lea---” Donghae got cut off when Sungmin placed a finger on his lips and grinned at him amusedly.
“Hush Hae. I would never, ever, cheat on you. I love you more than anything else, okay?” Sungmin assured, pecking his boyfriend’s lips before settling his hands on the younger’s broad shoulders.
“But what about Kyuhyun?” Donghae asked confusedly, not wanting to his presumption to be true yet not able to hold his curiosity in.
“What about Kyuhyun?” Sungmin teased.
“Sungmin-hyung!” Donghae whined.
“Didn't I tell you you're not allowed to call me hyung? And um… I love Kyuhyun, too.” Sungmin chuckled at Donghae’s crestfallen face.
“I--- You…do?” Donghae’s lips wibbled, tears threatening to spill any second.
“Of course I do. I love all the members. I especially love Kyuhyun as a dongsaeng.” Sungmin added, waiting for Donghae’s violent reaction which didn’t come.
“Oh, is that so? Well. I’m just gonna…go. Okay.” Donghae turned, yelping in surprise when Sungmin caught him by the waist and hugged him tightly from behind.
“Weren't you listening? I love Kyuhyun as a dongsaeng. He has been my roommate for the longest time. It’s hard not to. The brat grew into me. But you know what, Hae? I love you more. I love you I love you I love you. You're the one I chose, remember? And seriously, what kind of boyfriend calls his lover hyung?” Sungmin nuzzled the back of Donghae’s neck, the younger sighing in relief as he turned to envelop Sungmin in his arms, as if he didn't want to let go.
“What were you doing then?” Donghae whispered into Sungmin’s hair.
“Acupuncture! You silly dirty-minded boyfriend!” Sungmin giggled as he playfully smacked Donghae’s shoulder.
“Oh… Oh.” Donghae joined Sungmin’s laughing as he realized his mistake.
Just then, Sungmin broke away from his hold and ran to rummage through his bag, taking a small royal blue velvet box and excitedly went back to stand before Donghae.
“What’s that?” Donghae muttered curiously.
“I was going to wait for our anniversary but since you’re being a needy boyfrie---“ Sungmin’s words were cut when Donghae protested.
“Hey! I was not!” Donghae pouted.
“Yes you are. Anyway, as I was saying, I was going to give this to you on our anniversary next week. But since you’re being whiny and possessive about how I am yours and yours alone, might as well give you something to boost your sense of proprietorship or something.” Sungmin explained, opening the small velvet box and showing Donghae the simple band of silver therein.
“Are you proposing to me?” Donghae blinked, seemingly shocked by the tiny piece of silver.
“You have to stop being vapid or I’m really gonna leave you!” Sungmin warned, scowl in place.
“Kidding, babe!” Donghae amended, tickling Sungmin into submission, successfully ridding him of the cute pout on his face.
“Okay! Here,” Sungmin muttered excitedly as he took the ring from the box and hastily slipped it into Donghae’s ring finger.
“Perfect,” Donghae whispered as he admired the piece of jewelry, hugging Sungmin to his chest once more, wishing that they stay in the moment forever.
It was a simple ring, a replica of the one Sungmin had on his very own finger, nothing too elaborate. It didn’t even have any intricate designs or patterns carved on it, much less not a precious stone encrusted in it. Yet Donghae thought it was perfect - just like his and Sungmin’s love, no pretensions, no false emotions, and above all, not just fan service; just pure, unadulterated, love.
