I'm pretty fucking pissed off to be honest. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was shortlisted in the student category of the Professional Photographer of the Year competition. Got the magazine with the results:
I totally agree. It is an interesting picture, in its way, but quite frankly, to me it looks more like a snapshot. It looks like a photograph I might have taken, rather than someone with real skill. I'm an okay photographer to document personal things, like parties and such, but I wouldn't even dream of entering any of my photos in a contest. Just because I managed to take a cute picture or even an interesting one, that doesn't make a a work of art, imho. I would expect that someone who is not an artist and/or has not interest/doesn't know much about art might not be able to see the difference, but I presume the judges should be knowledgeable if they are judging a contest.
I'm so sorry for the frustration and annoyance. I do think, though, that with you being a finalist your work was not considered to be among the poor ones that the statement is criticizing. I know that's cold comfort, but I really do believe they had other entries in mind.
If it's not too much trouble, would you add to your post the link to the pic you sent? I know I've seen it, but I'm having difficulty bringing it to mind.
