In case you haven't noticed.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are in the freakin NBA Finals.
So this whole entry is going to be about the cavs. basically. seeing as these things dont happen that often. IN fact, we havent been to any championship in any major cleveland sport since 1997- TEN YEARS AGO-The Cleveland Indians in the World Series vs. the Florida Marlins. We dont need to talk about this result. but anyway here are a bunch of random thoughts about the cavs:
- Its been 43 years since we've won a championship in ANY MAJOR SPORT, my friends. 43 years of nothing. Thats dating back to the 1964 Browns AFC championship...there was NO SUPER BOWL then. come on now. We deserve it. We've been through enough heartbreak. We've stood the course. The time is now for a championship.
- speaking of heartbreak, you know what i hate? I hate how the cleveland media (cough, Plain Dealer, cough) as well as the national media is giving us the "pre-2004 Red Sox fan Treatment". Pre 2004 Boston fans were projected as " oh the curse of the Bambino! We're doomed!" Boston Fans didnt really think like that. Were they aware of the curse? yes. Did the media exaggerate this insanely? ohh yeah. For cleveland its: "Oh we're cursed! The Drive! The Shot! Jose Mesa! Let's talk about this ad naseum! Woe is us!" We don't think this way. we'd rather not talk about our past but look to our day of redemption. So when The Plain Dealer writes articles about how we beat the curse of the clock to go to the finals (the clock broke in game 6) and how if we lost the game would be called "THE CLOCK" like the shot, the drive, etc. you must be kidding. dont even think anything like that, plain dealer. wtf.
- How damn good is LeBron? I mean this is a totally obvious paragraph. but seriously. This guy is two years older than my brother and he can single handedly bring a team to the finals. thats absolutely insane.
- You know, saying LeBron did this single handedly is a bit facetious on my part. Not downplaying his greatness at all, but Daniel Boobie Gibson. A rookie in the league, 42nd pick in the draft, draining three after three to take us to the finals. Thats pretty damn sweet. I love this team.
- I was downtown when the cavs actually won the Eastern Conference Finals. Dave was inside the Q (like actually at the game) and I was outside watching in the plaza with Dave's best friend, Phil Vogel. Cleveland was ABSOLUTE PANDEMONIUM when we won, it was insane. Prospect St. was wall to wall people just celebrating, people on the newspaper dispensers etc. THey had to bring in the mounted police to attempt crowd control (didnt really work). I think my favorite was how everyone was just in the middle of the streets...cars would drive by honking their horns wildly and you would high five the people in the cars. Unbelievably insane.
- Another thing I hate, haha. Fairweather fans. The ones who, now that the cavs are in the finals, are SUDDENLY huge basketball/cavs fans. I like how none of them know who David Stern is, or who won the finals LAST year or anything. It is really really annoying. Sure, revel in the Cavs awesomeness. But dont claim you were here all along, cause damn, you weren't. This is what will inevitably happen whenever the Browns decide to get good.....SUDDENLY all of those random steeler shirt and bengals shirts that people are wearing around here will dissappear and people will claim to be Browns fans again. Assholes. Weren't you the ones one year ago taunting me for being a Browns fan when they were "totally hopeless" and sucked? Sports teams are like family. Sure, sometimes they embarrass you, but you stick by them anyway. Fairweather fans are like that estranged cousin who comes around to collect his part of the will when your rich great uncle dies. They suck. Oh and I'm pretty sure Bill Simmons said the bold part of my rant over there.
- So here we go. Game 1 tonight. Rise up, Cleveland.
