Humans-People-are selfish beings. We are so selfish!
We only believe in something if it benefits US. And only us-the individual [not as whole...and I mean a WHOLE]- and how it can bring us immediate happiness.
I don't believe in God, or believe that the Truth is real, because it puts a smile on my face immediately. I don't follow His Word because I think that everything will end in a fairy tale and that everything will be easy in life.
Being a Christian is hard. It's the hardest thing I have ever done..and will EVER do. Following Him is not easy. I have to skip out on a lot of what our society thinks is fun..and what I used to think is fun. I have to make myself understand and believe that when someone dies or if someone/I get sick..that it is for the best. Even if I don't see it.
Jesus didn't say that following him will lead you through a fairyland on Earth.
He didn't say that it was easy.
Matthew 10:34 - “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword."
Matthew 7:13-14 - “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few."
Luke 13:23-24 - "And someone said to him, 'Lord, will those who are saved be few?' And he said to them, 'Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.'"
Jesus numerously explains that being a Christian isn't easy, and that very few will be able to follow Him.
It's not that we choose it to be hard. It's just because we are born evil.
I am pretty sure it is mentioned early on that Man [and Woman] are born evil.. After Noah obeys God and He is pleased, he promises he won't destroy the planet because of Man..I think though. I am not a pastor or some all-knowing being. But this is how I interpret it.
Genesis 8:20-21 - God's Covenant with Noah
'Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse [1] the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.'
Oh and here's a good verse from the Bible:
James 1:13 (Show me James 1)
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one
[I like it...very encouraging]
