Had coffee with Mr Truss today, and I feel much more cheerful. I swear, I don't know how I would keep my head together if it weren't for him. =D

Creative Writing Meme:
If you happen to be working on some creative writing project, fanfiction or what have you, post one sentence (or more) from each of your current work(s) in progress in your journal. It should probably be your favorite or most intriguing sentence so far, but what you choose is entirely your discretion. Mention the title (and genre) if you like, but don't mention anything else -- this is merely to whet the general appetite for your forthcoming work(s).

Time and Space (Fantasy/Adventure)
Russen was scribbling away on the back of a paper from his portfolio, waving his free hand to get their attention. He held it up for the security guards, as well as the Board, to see. It read: 'WHO RUNS TIME?'

Time and Space: Adventures in Domesticity - Space: Little People (General Fiction)
As he prepared toast for himself before work the following morning, Russell watched an ant scuttle out from under the breadbox and make for one of his larger crumbs. Wife's threats in mind, he rolled his newspaper and prepared to swat it. He had scarcely raised it above the counter when something surfaced in the back of his mind: an episode of The Twilight Zone called 'Little People'. At that moment, he had a vision of himself screaming for mercy as a colossal Russell slapped down a gigantic newspaper on his head, and paused.

Time and Space: Adventures in Domesticity - Time: The Desk (General Fiction)
Often as he passed his desk leaving or entering his den, the thought would pass through his mind: 'I should clean that.' It was only of late, when it was becoming notoriously difficult to balance books and papers on top of the mess and putting down his morning cup of coffee involved a flurry of paper hitting the floor, that this thought became a conscious one. But it wasn't until a freak landslide of paperwork crushed his favorite antique ink well that it became a practical one.

On Additions to and the Degeneration of Language (Essay)
Degeneration of language, I think, only occurs when these layers of social language infringe upon and intend to replace each other. When new editions of Shakespeare's plays are published entirely in street slang and Plato's dialogues are only printed in chatspeak, that is degeneration of language.

Wandering Ink.: Blog Introduction (Essay)
Similarly, as stated in the 1984 quote, reading a book that tells you what you already know brings more structure to your thoughts. It says what you couldn't find the words for, what you would have said if you had a clue how to say it.
