Went to law school forum. Have decided that applications process is designed entirely to see how good your ability to accumulate trivia is (speaking of,
adbfoldem, I need some stuff from you, but I promise I won't let them ask you for money).
Brought home about 50 lbs. of paper (applications, view books, little pamphlets designed to make me love somewhere-or-other's program in something-I-may-or-may-not-care-about). Sat with
gdmusumeci over dinner and sorted schools.
I will absolutely apply to the following:
Safeties:
- Brooklyn Law (seriously -- the guy told me they'd not only let me in but that I'd probably get a merit scholarship *and* housing, just on the strength of my LSAT and GPA, and in the world of $50K/year law school, that's worth something)
- New York Law (most enthusiastic person I spoke to all day)
General (for most of these, I'm over their median LSAT and under their median GPA):
- Boston University
- UC Hastings (SF)
- Northwestern (would be a reach, but they sent me a fee waiver, so I suspect I'll do okay)
- Fordham (almost went there for undergrad until I realized it was stupid to follow my then-current boyfriend just for the sexx0rz, almost went there for a master's until they discontinued the program, third time's the charm?)
- UIUC (
gdmusumeci's dad should be willing to write me a recommendation, and then I'll for sure get in)
- UCLA (I really don't want to move to LA, but it's a good school, and again with the fee waivers)
- George Washington (I wanna be a talking head -- DC's the place to do it)
Reach:
- Columbia (hey, they let me into Barnard for undergrad, that's almost like already having gotten in there once, right?)
- USC (
gdmusumeci's making me apply to this one, see prior notes on hating LA)
- UC Berkeley (not applying to the school in your backyard is just silly, even if you don't think you'll get in)
- Georgetown (see prior notes on DC)
- Stanford (again with the backyardiness)
I might apply to any of these:
- U Iowa (I really liked the guy they sent to the event, and I wouldn't mind living in Iowa City, but
gdmusumeci is leery of the job market)
- Penn Law (Philly is a hole, but
gdmusumeci likes it)
- UVA (I don't think I'll get in, for one thing)
- U Chicago (again with the not wanting to waste my money)
- NYU (are we sensing a theme yet?)
- Duke (I'm pretty sure I don't want to move to North Carolina, even if it is near RTP, but I kinda want to work on the Duke Innocence Project. Of course, they're the #10 school in the country, so my chances of getting in are slim.)
- University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (I have friends there, but
gdmusumeci doesn't seem too fond of the idea)
- U Mich -- Ann Arbor (It's Michigan. On the other hand, I suspect I may be a UM legacy somehow...)
I am definitely not applying to the following schools that were on my list but aren't anymore:
- Notre Dame (I hate football)
- Yale (New Haven is a hole and I wouldn't get in anyway)
- Cornell (as above, only Ithaca)
- Vanderbilt (don't wanna move to Tennessee)
- Emory (
gdmusumeci doesn't want to move to Atlanta
I'm also considering UT - Austin, Washington University - St. Louis (except
gdmusumeci really doesn't want to move there), and Washington & Lee. I am definitely *not* considering Harvard, which is the other school that you might have expected to see here -- as much as I love Boston, it's the #2 school in the country and I'm sure I wouldn't get in. I'm only applying to Stanford because it's here and Columbia because, well, a girl's got to dream.
Comments, suggestions, "oh God no, you'll hate it (t)here"?
