A/N: Okay, I'm currently watching a documentary about how evil Wal-Mart is, so it's really hard to think of creative ways to say that
sheepybunbuns and
magicofisis are awesome. But they are.
Harry couldn’t help but stare at the amazing woman that seemed to have appeared from out of nowhere. She looked to be older than Dumbledore, though she had apparently aged very well. Her stark white hair flowed down her back. It looked wild, but Harry noticed that it stayed remarkably clear of her face.
Harry was about to reply to the old woman when he realized he was still wearing the Invisibility Cloak. He slipped the hood off, surprised. “You can see me?”
She laughed. Her laughter rang softly through the air, and Harry suddenly felt at ease. “I can see you now, my child. Your cloak did not fail you. I could not see you with it on.”
“Then how did you know I was here?”
“I felt you, my child. Sight is not the only sense.”
Harry was confused. He wanted to know what she meant, but a more pressing question came out of his mouth, equal parts paranoia and curiosity. “Who are you?”
The woman laughed again, and Harry felt more relaxed. “How rude of me. I have had many titles. I am Madam Patherty, mistress of occurrences. And you, my child?”
Harry pondered for a second. He was very sure this was the first time anyone in the Wizarding World had not known his name. After six years, he had finally met someone who didn’t know his story. Someone who didn’t ask to look at the scar. Someone who didn’t ask for his autograph. He couldn’t fully ignore the small part of him that was disappointed.
“Are you quite all right?”
“Yes, but-“
“Oh, it doesn’t matter. I’m terrible at remembering names, anyway. What’s in them that makes them worth remembering, is what I want to know.”
Madam Patherty began to walk down a hallway as she spoke, and Harry felt the unexplainable urge to follow her. She deeply confused him. Despite her aged appearance, she moved and acted with an amazing energy. As the odd pair walked, Harry began to look around at the walls. He didn’t see any portraits or suits of armor standing along the hallways. There were torches at regular intervals lighting the way, but Harry was unnerved. The place reminded him of the Department of Mysteries. He was considering this idea when he came to an abrupt stop, just short of running into Madam Patherty, who had apparently stopped to look at him.
“What is it, child? Why do you feel troubled?”
Harry pointed lamely to the walls. “They’re blank. It reminds me of someplace else.”
Emily leaned her face down, as if she were looking at Harry over glasses that weren’t there.
“I asked you why you feel troubled, child. Not what you see.”
“But… what I feel is affected by what I see.”
Madam Patherty’s eyes opened wide and she smiled. “You’re right!”
She turned and continued to walk down the hallway, talking apparently to herself about this new discovery and its potential effects on the world around her. Harry was now too deeply intrigued to turn away.
Harry followed Madam Patherty down two more hallways, took a left, then a right, then another left, and lost track of his path as they continued towards their unnamed destination. Finally, they stopped in front of a simple wooden door with the name Emily Patherty engraved on it. Madam Patherty threw her hands up, almost as if she felt surprised, or overjoyed. Harry couldn’t tell which, from looking.
“We’re here already! That went by so fast!”
Harry was still confused. “Where are we?”
Madam Patherty opened the door and waved him inside. “My office, of course.”
She walked inside and waited for him. Harry entered the incredibly large, circular room and saw vines growing everywhere. All around him there were vines with all sorts of colors of budding flowers. He stepped closer to the flowers and saw that they were roses, some still wrapped up in leaves. They smelled beautifully sweet. Harry looked up and realized that he was in a hollowed-out tower. The dimensions of the room were about the same size as Gryffindor Tower, if you took out all the walls inside. Unlike Gryffindor Tower, however, Harry couldn’t see the ceiling of this room. It looked as though it went on forever.
“Amazing.”
Madam Patherty rolled her eyes. “There you go again, judging by looks. I’ll admit this place is awe-inspiring and picturesque, but you can’t determine that simply by looking around!”
Harry was barely paying attention to her as she spoke. He noticed when she had stopped, and said, “What is this place? What are these roses?”
“Those aren’t roses. They’re kizzleburks.”
Harry looked at Madam Patherty. “Kizzleburks? But they look like ros-“
“You just can’t keep away from looks, can you? They don’t feel like roses.”
Harry turned to the walls and walked over to one of the vines. He saw one bright red rose that was almost open and reached out towards it. Carefully, he touched the vine. He felt a very odd sensation. It reminded him of being pulled by a portkey, but this time it felt like the pull was coming from his heart, instead of his navel. The world fell out of focus for a moment and Harry suddenly felt as though he was the happiest person on earth. He broke into uncontrollable giggling, as though he were being tickled, and dropped to the floor, still laughing. When he looked up a moment later, Madam Patherty was standing over him with a wide smile on her face. Her smile went unfazed as lightning illuminated the tower.
“See? Kizzleburks. Each kizzleburk vine here is tied to the heart of a student at Hogwarts. What you just felt is what another student will feel in twenty three minutes.”
Harry was deeply confused. “Twenty three minutes?”
Madam Patherty stepped over to the flower Harry had touched and looked closely between it and the floor. Harry could tell she was measuring the distance.
“Sorry. Twenty four minutes and thirty two seconds.”
Something in Harry’s brain finally clicked. “So, you can use these flowers to see the future?”
Madam Patherty blew air up her face, disturbing the hair atop her head. She sounded frustrated. “You can’t see the future, child. The kizzleburks feel the future.”
She paused for a moment, as though making a highly crucial and important decision.
“Come, follow me.”
Madam Patherty moved across the room, where a circular section of the stone floor was raised several inches-not just from the ground, but off the ground. She stepped onto the hovering stone circle and beckoned Harry to follow. Once Harry had stepped onto the stone, Madam Patherty bent over and tapped it with her wand.
“You might want to sit down,” she said, doing so herself.
Harry sat down only seconds before the stone shot upwards. They were going faster than he had ever been, even on his Firebolt. He looked over to Madam Patherty, who was smiling, despite the hair blown straight down into her face. After several minutes, the stone lift slowed down and stopped. Madam Patherty tapped the side of the stone circle. It moved towards one side of the tower and stopped six inches from the wall. Harry looked to the place where the stone was closest to the wall. Something caught his eye. Two of the roses were intertwined so tightly that Harry could only tell they were two vines by the color of the flowers. One was the same colour as the flower he had touched before. The other was a bright green; the colour of Harry’s eyes. Harry walked to that point and reached out to the green flower.
The moment he touched the petals, Harry was filled with the greatest feeling he had ever had. He felt physically and emotionally filled. He felt hands all over his body; hands that knew where to reach, to rub and to touch. He felt whispered breath in his ear, and even though he couldn’t hear the voice, he knew whose it was. Out of surprise, Harry released the rose.
“The rose-“
“Kizzleburk-“
“Yeah, whatever-that was Ron’s touch.”
Madam Patherty’s smile widened. “And your kizzleburk.”
Harry stared blankly at Madam Patherty. He pieced together all that was happening. “Then Ron and I will be together?“
“Sooner than you think.”
Harry looked back to the intertwined vines. He was about to reach out and touch Ron’s flower when it turned wilted and turned black. His died seconds after. Suddenly, the tower began to shake. All around them, the flowers on the wall started turning black, and the vines began to fall off the wall. Harry looked around in fear. All around them, petals were falling onto the stone, and it appeared that vines would be coming down soon after. He looked across the stone. Madam Patherty was no longer smiling, but calmly walked towards Harry. She touched him on the shoulder.
“The future you will save is in danger.”
“Why? Is something going to happen to me?”
“No. He is in pain, and in danger.”
Harry knew that she was talking about Ron, but was still confused and upset.
“But the prophecy’s about me! Why is Ron involved?”
“Did you think you were alone?”
Harry was stopped, but Madam Patherty continued talking.
“There is little time. You have only seconds to fly to him, before it is too late.”
“That’s impossible! Even if I knew how, you can’t apparate in the castle, and I don’t even know where he is!”
Madam Patherty continued to speak calmly. “I said fly, first of all. And secondly, you’ve got to feel him.”
Harry finally got the point. He focused and transformed into a phoenix. Madam Patherty smiled again and said, “Now feel him.”
Harry closed his eyes and thought. He didn’t understand what she was asking him to do; all he could think of was Ron, in pain somewhere. He opened his beak and sang out, wishing he could find Ron. Suddenly, he felt the floor beneath him disappear. When he opened his eyes, he saw Ron below, chained to the wall. Harry landed on a slab stone table and transformed back into human form. He grabbed his wand and blasted the chains off the wall, catching Ron. Harry gently laid Ron on the slab table. His best mate wasn’t breathing.
