Pied Piper

Softly she said once
"I think that a man
could get his heart broken
over you." she finished
and looked at me,
hypothetically, of course,
into the screen of my eyes.
But it was not a statement
of the things which
compliments consist of.
She meant the way I smile
and laugh, and easily charm
my way into the hearts of
those around me
by being candid and witty
with a joie de vivre
that no one can place their
finger exactly on, but it's
ever present all the same.
Unwittingly I lure them
like the Pied Piper with his flute.
But all too often where there was
once floating and delicate laughter
and confidences yet untold,
there turns a sullenness and anguish
when they find that I have lured
the Children, and not the Rats.
