So, while there's yet to be a formal announcement, I am very please to learn that Google is going to be holding
Summer of Code again this year.
Last year I had a great time working with
Lahiru who contributed a totally rocking CLI to
Apache Qpid. I'm already looking forward to this year.1
GSoC is a great program, it provides students with an opportunity to get paid for working on Open Source software and it provides projects with motivated new contributors.
So, if you're in University and you're looking for a summer job, summer project, Masters dissertation topic or similar have a look at the
Qpid ideas page. Of course, if there's something cool with Qpid you want to do, you don't need to pick something off there. They're ideas, not a pick list. ;)
Last year coding ran May - August, with applications starting in March. But that's no reason to wait to get involved. The number 1 thing I learned from last year, and I learned a lot, was how important early engagement with the community is. The codes open, getting to know the code base and the community is perfectly
