D'oh! and other updates

* Re: that last post - those are invite codes to DreamWidth. Sorry.

* Also, 13 schools in the area are closed today for swine flu cases. Including one of the high schools in the district where I grew up. Not the one I attended, the other one--which my sister and two of her kids attended. Eep.

* Today is "Black Friday" in the district: all the teachers and staff are wearing black to support those who were laid off. Including those who were fired for cause and those who are retiring, that's a total of nearly THREE HUNDRED teachers who won't be in the classroom next year, because the district isn't planning (right now) to fill those positions. Three hundred teachers, out of a population of just over a thousand. That's more than a quarter of the teachers.

Now, chances are they'll be recalling most of those fairly quickly once they discover where the "holes" are in the schools. In fact, this is what I think: I think the district made these enormous cuts just so they can call folks back and then announce self-righteously, "See? We said we'd only be able to call back 100 teachers, but we called back 150! We dug really deep to support our kids!" *gag* I think they think it'll make them look good. Apparently, they think teachers, support staff, and parents are idiots.

I dunno. If I weren't already planning to leave, I think I'd be seriously considering it. This is just plain crap.
