Diana Gabaldon has
some opinions on fanfic.
I was going to write a rant about this, because reading that blog post made me simultaneously cry blood and spit acid. Her likening fanfic to "selling [her children] into white slavery" didn't really help either. (No, really.
She actually said that.) The
FW writeup has more links, including
this fantastic post by
bookshop.
To sum up the points I would have made if I had written this rant:
1. Your characters are not real.
2. Copyright law does not work that way.
3. You are interrogating fanfic from the wrong perspective.
4. YOUR CHARACTERS. ARE NOT. REAL.
I mean, there was more, but at some point my brain started to melt and it got harder not to stop and say "ASSHOLE! DON'T MAKE ME FUCK YOU!" (As you do.)
Anyway, I read her
follow-up post, and realised that, you know what? There are many arguments worth having, but this is not it.
And then I read some fanfic.
It was good.
