A JunePride Mea Culpa: My Homophobia

I'm constantly blogging and posting to be recognized, included, understood as a genderqueer person. But acceptance within the MOGII community is a two-way street and I haven't always been the ideal poster child for good and non-judgmental attitudes. Thank you for sharing this. It is similar to how many young closeted gay guys act -- they hate being accused of being gay so they adopt anti-gay attitudes ... even though they are gay themselves.

A lot of queer folk just want to be thought of as "normal". They don't want any pretext for bullying to exist, so they wish the abnormal queer folk would just go away.

This is how bullying spreads anti-queer attitudes, even among the bullied queers --> if we act like we're normal, then we won't get bullied anymore.

This goes beyond bullying queers, however, as you learned growing up. There's all kinds of bullying, it's how the herd enforces a code of normality. This is a crucial reason why I try to explain to queer folks that even non-queer folks are oppressed by heteronormativity. And even white folks are oppressed by white supremacy. And even men are oppressed by patriarchy. Although the bullying is expressed toward a vulnerable minority, its main use is to police the majority.

Even the straight-acting straight males are oppressed by heteronormativity! A lot of them secretly wish they didn't have to be so fucking straight-acting all the time. They are just as oppressed as the queers are, but we don't see the oppression, instead we "see" compliance (if we see anything at all).
