A Rather Painful Observation.
I was driving through the mountains with David today when he mentioned off-handedly that we were the only two people he knew who didn't carry some sort of emotional baggage. His theory was that we possess some sort of wisdom (or foresight) that we managed to be resilient and reasonably well-adjusted without having to learn the hard way, like so many people.
He said, however, that I was toeing the line by socializing with undesirables and unintentionally immersing myself into their volatile emotional clusterfucks. He keeps such company at arms length whereas I embrace it warmly. He then, of course, punched me very hard in the arm and called me stupid. I tried to laugh it off of course but by golly, I do believe he's right.
