Well, at least according to some commenters hereThe reason: there was lots of whinning about "Russians taking over LJ", so I replied: "Actually Jews, not Russians", and then the heaven and hell broke on me, especially when I used the words "Italian mafia" and "Irish gangs" to illustrate the difference between the understanding of nationality in ( Read more... )

I think some of the conflict came because your use of the word is interpreted differently in a lot of western, especially american, culture.
Political correctness becomes important in a country which consist of very many ethnicities and nationalities and has such a strong focus on individuality and self-empowerment.

One has to be careful and openminded and eager to understand why conflicts or anger arise so it can be solved in a peaceful manner. I read your threads and I understand your point. I don't entirely agree, but I don't consider you a racist in any degree. But pointing out that someone is "not russian, but russian jewish" is considered problematic in american culture. Even if you don't like it, you have to be aware of it and not ridicule or insult them when they get angry.

I am not american either, I am swedish living in norway and I have extensive contact with americans and british and germans. I have met many different situations where misunderstandings have occurred even in norway. Yet I consider myself as part of the same ethnicity as norwegians but there are also important cultural differences. Ethnicity is very complicated and I think its down to each individual person to define their own ethnicity and also be understanding when others get it wrong.

Norwegian TV had a cute russian inspired dance show when Latvia was hosting the Eurovision Song Contest. The latvians were extremely upset that russian culture was being connected to their culture, but when norwegian TV apologised, the matter was resolved in peace and closed.

In summary, I am just saying that I think your point was meant in best interest and you suffered from cultural differences in the use of words and understanding of cultural expressions. I have done the same mistake many times.

All the best in peace.
