it was a catholic wedding

and i dare say i didn't like it much. my friend from school converted to catholicism to marry his fiancee. and conveniently enough, because of that they could get married in a catholic church. but the thought that dominated my mind in the weeks leading up to the wedding was, "what would Martin Luther think?!?!"

i'll tell you what he would have thought if he were in the same church i was: "Holy shit, Jesus looks TERRIBLE up there on the cross" he had sprays of gory blood painted on him, and an extremely unsettling expression on his face. the protestant in me thought many things. first of all i was taught to emphasize that the trinity are one, so the emphasis on wallowing in jesus' suffering ... well, it was unpalatable. secondly, this church was painted brighter than a 1970s street tart. it was like papal electric boogaloo. thirdly, i agreed with the priest: yes, it was VERY strange that a dude who's not allowed to marry anyone got to talk about marriage and what that union is. and lastly, the catholics don't mess around with the babies. that priest was mentioning babies so much that I thought he was subliminal man from saturday night live. happy wedding, now go make some babies!

i have noticed in the weddings i've been to in the last 5 years, that i'm totally not down with the god part of wedding ceremonies. perhaps it's because i'm snotty about my religion and don't want to dabble in the masses' versions of christianity. but mostly, it just seems to rob the free will from the act, and that doesn't sit well with me.

also, last week i watched buckeroo bansai for the first time since i was 10 or 11. it was not as cool as i remembered it being. and also, peter weller is such a swaggering "i'm care more about history than you" host of "engineering an empire" on the history channel, it was hard to believe he was such a do-gooder hero. i kept expecting him to break into "i got my doctorate here in Rome, and let me tell you...."
it's strange how my childhood memories turn out to be not so accurate after all.
