Phyllis Gotlieb - R.I.P.

Jul 19, 2009 17:19

Just heard that Phyllis Gotlieb has died. The news saddens me immensely. Phyllis was one of the most likeable SF writers I have ever met.

I think it was the 2001 Ad Astra SF convention in Toronto that I first met her. (It was the same convention where I met Hal Clement for the first and last time). I was thoroughly impressed by her good nature, her joy of life and her quick intelligence. After that meeting, we corresponded individually as well as through the SF Canada listserv.

In reviewing a fantasy e-book of mine, "Ghelenden", Phyllis was kind enough to say this: "Ahmed Khan's delightful fantasies, set in the world of not-quite-mythical Ghelenden, freshen an ancient storytelling tradition with a sharp-eyed modern viewpoint and a sparkle of satire."

Later, in 2007, when I was editing the anthology, "Fall and Rise", Phyllis contributed her story, "Saturday's Child", which virtually became the backbone of that anthology.

Phyllis was truly the Grand Dame of Canadian SF. Canada will miss her, and on a personal level, so will I.
