Modpost: On Hotlinking
The photos posted here at ahh_serie_a are for the enjoyment of all our members -- everyone is welcome to ogle look at them, save them, and even post them elsewhere. Anything is fair game -- unless otherwise noted, no one owns the pictures they post, all contributors do is collect and share the pictures.
Problems arise, though, when members hotlink or, other words, share the pictures elsewhere without first saving and rehosting them. As explained in razor2rozary's post two years ago on The Evils of Hotlinking, when you hotlink, bandwidth is often exceeded, which mean the pictures don't show up anywhere, either here or wherever the hotlinks are posted. If images hosted in an album with unlimited bandwidth are hotlinked, the hotlinker is essentially stealing from the original host, since they've paid for unlimited bandwidth.
All of which is to say: If you're hotlinking, please stop. If you think you might be hotlinking but aren't sure, check the post linked above; if after reading it you're still not sure, PM a mod and we'll be happy to talk you through saving pictures and hosting them on your own.
Additionally, in an effort to cut down on the hotlinking problem, we're doing two things. First, the community once again has moderated membership, enabling us to screen out empty/brand new journals. Second, we will be going through the current member list and banning those journals that are suspicious -- only empty journals that show no activity and/or are members only of ASA or other, picture-heavy communities will be affected. If you are banned in error, PM one of the mods and we'll correct the problem right away.
