The match against Chile, they were up 3-1, then they got a red card and ended up losing 4-3. I think they were so shocked by that that they never really recovered and just sorta crumbled. They didn't get any points, and for a team going in as favorites...yikes.
Man, I should go download that match if I can find it -- depressing or not, it must have been incredibly exciting. (Chile are awfully good, it'll be interesting to see if those kids stay together and continue to succeed as they get older -- my understanding is that that team were mostly U21s, too.)
The U-20 team they used last summer at the WC was really good, too, at least until the semis when they lost to Argentina (iirc, the Argies were being dirty) and that set off some dramz. (I still laugh when I read about how the one guy said the police threw acid in his face. I'm sure that would leave some sort of visible mark.) Hopefully they've matured.
Christ, I'd forgotten about that! Or, rather, not really forgotten, but not associated it with the boys in Toulon. I wonder if there were any from that group in this team, I bet there were a few. (10 police officers AND acid? That is one tough kid.)
