Feh. I am in a severely bitchy mood tonight.
- I’m broke this month and having trouble making bills.
- My current salvation lies in going permanent at a night-shift office job, which assures I will (a) become Dilbert and (b) Never Have Any Fun Again.
- I ate half a carton of yogurt today before I realized its expiration date was Aug. 19.

"But, Dave," you might say, "you're the one with his own store. You can determine your own hours, your own level of work. Who are you to lecture anyone else about employment?" I'm lecturing because right now my very nice job isn't paying too well. I expect to make ten thousand dollars in profit at the end of this year. That covers a bit more than half of my yearly personal expenses.
Now I'm in a position where I can tough it out. But if it's tight for us with nice jobs, then it's probably tight all over. Other people have assured me this is the case.
That's why I say -- take the night job. It may suck, but not paying bills will inevitably suck more. I hope something better comes along, but I don't think you can be too choosy right now.
Take this advice with more than a grain of salt. I don't know much about your overall financial status. I'm just saying that I'm a bit worried about everyone now.

This job actually is pretty dreamy - the supervisor is committed to making it a cool place to be, they're flexible with hours and people who have other things they consider their "real" calling, the people are really nice to me and to each other. I guess I just always have that thing -- that many L.A. people seem to have -- where you avoid getting too "comfortable" because you're afraid it'll lead you to stop following your dreams. In the last 15-20 years, though, mostly all it's led to is crappy furniture and late notices, so I am learning and giving into trying something new, just not completely quietly, you know? :)
And besides, there are other writing gigs on the horizon, possibly some that contain upward-mobility. This is just for now.
