I just heard Gary Newman's song "Cars" being used to sell actual cars in a TV ad. You know the one: "Here in my car / I feel safest of all / I can lock all my doors / it's the only way to live / in cars..."

Um, hello? The song was ironic.

I've seen quite a few odd mismatches between a song's content and the commercial.

"Lust For Life" for a cruise ship. The song is about heroin.

"London Calling" for a car. They cut out the bit about nuclear war.

"Fortunate Son." I forget the exact ad, but they play "Somebody people were born to wave the flag" over patriotic images, but skip over the part about how those same people expect others to die in war.
