the other side of me

"The Other Side of Me"

She stares pensively into the mirror
Which I look out of.
The frown on her face
Masks the smile on mine.
Her face-
Filled with the worry lines of age
Mirrors mine-
Filled with the laughter of youth.

On the outside,
We are the same person-
Raven black hair which rolls past our shoulders,
Which we always wish was longer.
Those same café eyes
Sparkle when we laugh
and shine when we cry.

Her life,
Which has the luxuries and riches of la pura vida
Seems so bright.
Mine,
Floating along age old pane of broken glass
Seems so barren.

Her thoughts-
Shrouded by the uncertainty of what may happen,
are clouded by the perception
that the future has but darkness.
Thoughts that wreck havoc;
thoughts that kill.

These thoughts are what surprise me-
What reason does she have to fear?
For, I see the fear in her eyes
As she looks at me;
The cold sweat of her fingers
As they try to touch mine.
I hear the foreign words:
Of anger, of frustration, of resentment.

“Look at your life,”
I urge.
“You are able to smell the sweet champagne.
With the wind dancing through your hair.
Your clothes still linger with the scent of The boy,
And your lips smart from the taste of his tongue.
You have felt the warmth of human touch,
Have known how to love, how to hate, the joy of friendship.
I beg of you to look past the darkness
And find the light from within.”

For a second, she almost hears me.
And then-
Deafened.
