LJ, Must I Quit You?
I'm loath to quit my LJ since I shelled out like $300 for a permanent account long ago. Plus, I don't think dreamwidth cross-posts to FB, and I still sometimes hope people might be following along. I've kind of lost track of friends after quitting FB, and that upsets me.
Anyway, this new user agreement...I'm not sure I understand what the big deal is. It says it's not legally binding, but it also says shit has to be in accordance with all these Russian laws, which of course I don't know and they don't really explain what it is. I've accepted for now, but I'm seriously contemplating deleting my account. Russia just keeps doing hinky shit, especially here in the US, and I don't want to inadvertently support them or give them ammo to let the US head further down the path of subjugation (by them or our own government...).
What to do, what to do? I wish I could have my 300 user icons over here. I don't want to pay for DW when I have a permanent LJ, but I don't want monthly payments of anything, which is why I saved up for a permanent account. I wanted it permanent.
But Russia -- Oh, wait, I'm probably not allowed to say what I want to say about Russia.

I've not seen any changes since the servers switched to Russia, which makes me think, eh, this ain't a big deal. But I've seen changes in my COUNTRY since Russia started being extra hinky again, and some of that stuff in the new user agreement seems hinky. If, as mentioned in that link, only the fact that they want us to sign something that hasn't been properly translated into our own language and doesn't explain the laws in effect which concern us in other countries.
No 'promoting pornography'? I had a kinky blog and post all manner of sex-positive stuff, including pictures. They hate gays -- are we allowed to even mention being not-straight? What's this with identifying bloggers? Observe the honor, dignity, blah blah of corporations? SAY WHAT? I've heard that it says they get access to use our content, but I don't see that -- then again, it's 6-something a.m. and I don't speak legalese, so maybe I missed it.
I'm still up in the air. I would love to hear your thoughts on whether it's necessary to delete if one is a non-Russian citizen who appreciates privacy and democracy.
