[Even he hacked your code. ]2ndunitcaptainJanuary 8 2010, 05:05:31 UTC
I understand how you feel. It's hard to judge just what we should do, but I don't have much of a right to uphold the code here when I've already broken it at home.
[ poor okita ]2ndunitcaptainJanuary 8 2010, 05:20:06 UTC
I wasn't about to let them all die because of some damn rules. Rules are created to protect people and keep something together. If they destroy the people that follow them, they're useless.
[ he had fail code, it's his own dumb fault ]ahappylieJanuary 8 2010, 05:26:28 UTC
[And enter internal conflict because Okita is one of the biggest followers of those damn rules, but he also recognizes the distaste for the 'fight until you die' mentality. STUPID MAN AND HIS DEVOTION.]
We trained them better than that. There should not have been--
You need to tell me what happens, Nagakura-san. I've kept away from the history section in the library out of deference to you, but if you withhold this information any longer, I will no longer hesitate.
... In my time, there'd been some major changes and betrayals. A man named Itou and his group ambushed us after.... after Heisuke Toudou betrayed us. Aburakouji... the base was on fire, and we were trapped there, surrounded. A lot of our men were dead. I made the decision. I told Sano to lead them out. They tried to defend the code, but damn it... it wasn't our code, Okita-san! It was changed! We were falling apart... We were dying. What's the point in our code, our way of living, if there's none of us left?
I wasn't about to let the people I was meant to be responsible for die out when I could do something about it!
... I really don't care... if I end up being sentenced to seppuku. I'll take my punishment. I only promised Sano I'd survive the incident. If my orders saved them, that's all that matters to me.
[Toudou defecting? Okita can't imagine a time when Toudou would ever leave. He'd only go if Yamanami left, which would also explain the code changing, but that--
Okita flicks on the voice function.] He...wouldn't sentence you. He would never do that to a friend.
You did what you had to in order to ensure survival to the next battle. The battles that will come soon if the enemy is growing stronger.
[ god their future sucks balls ]ahappylieJanuary 8 2010, 06:09:46 UTC
.....
I understand. I won't bring this up again. [He understands all too well - if Toudou left and it wasn't with Yamanami, that can only mean that Yamanami is no longer with the living. And he wouldn't pick up a sword, which means only one outcome.]
[ 8( jerk... making shinpachi cry. ]2ndunitcaptainJanuary 8 2010, 06:28:04 UTC
Right... but I know I have to go back. I have... I have to make sure they survive. I have to make sure Sanosuke makes it through. I sent him to clear the way out.
Heisuke... told me they were surrounded. 'It's all gone to hell' he said. Damn it, I can't lose him, too, you know?
[ damn him DX ]ahappylieJanuary 8 2010, 06:33:19 UTC
It's funny...isn't it? We could hope for them to come here and therefore ensure their safety, but then they would feel the same as we do - boats without harbor, always looking to the shore.
We'll go back, perhaps we can change it somehow, so that it never gets to that point. You won't lose them.

I'm sure you had a reason. A good reason, yes?

I'm sorry...about Toudou-san.
...
Did he leave with Yamanami-san?

It's not important. That bastard abandoned us, he knew everything that would happen and told us nothing.
....
Okita-san, for the love of all that be, don't make me explain that.

It's easy to want them to just come here, where we can rebuild, maybe...live in the peace we tried to create.
