I keep thinking I'm doing this all wrong. I'm a children's writer with definite aspirations. It'd be wonderful to accept the award for my effort in the field of my endeavor for sure, especially if I had the credentials where others would say "hells yeah, she's a kid's writer, haven't you read her..."
But, I don't think most people understand how truly serious the Gulf situation is. And without children I won't even matter. Let alone all those high falutin' dreams.
WE now have state sized oil floating around in the ocean. Not let me state for you, but STATE, as in Rhode Island, Vermont (which for some reason as beautiful as it is sound a bit like up-chucking) CONING in the ocean. What that means is everything coming into contact with it DIES.
WE've let others attack those oil plumes with DISPERSANTS far more pervasively poisonous and HOW does that fix the friggin' problem of getting oil OUT of the water. Seriously, Think about this, SOLUTIONS people, not quick "fixes".
WE have wetlands already under attack, with most people not even understanding how wetlands have been the greatest defenders of this beautiful land of ours. How crucial a role they play. Wetlands have already been under attack, and ignorance has helped it, listening to the rhetoric, it's a just of tree-huggers whining loudly for species most have never heard about.
WEtlands protect us from hurricanes and tornadoes. They mitigate the weather patterns. You remember the saying hell hath no fury like Mother Nature is not happy. Or something like that. Please. Ask those people in Arkansas (or New Orleans or anyone who's lived through this devastation), what would you do if it was turned up a notch, two or three or five. Because who the HELL knows how much damage has been done and how to fix it.
The government is ASKING BP for their assessments. Excuse me? Are we to wait till oil is appearing in the Canadien sound and hurricanes are hurling oil clomps up in the midlands for anyone to get the gravity of this situation? I understand we often look to politics (and GOD knows WE love to blame people for what is wrong. I don't care about blame (perhaps I do a little bit, as in BE RESPONSIBLE, though I doubt corporations ever will or can be, it is not their function, which is why they must NEVER rule the world). I care about fixing this damned problem and leaders leading, instead of waiting for polling, corporate or SCOTUS words because this problem grows EXPONENTIALLY. I care that I have a population that's here to read my wonderful (okay in MY mind, lol) words of wisdom, or more likely shits and giggles, and then I will matter. If they are not here, I've never been here. Neither have you.
