The Magic Television

I finally lobbied successfully for a large(r) screen TV. My wife beats back all technological advances until time and price drops render discussion moot. Even so, it's bigger than she would have gotten (32", for those who care about size, and you know who you are).

The television seems to be intelligent, and the cable company's wires seem to be crossed. We are getting digital channels we didn't expect (we only have the very basic cable, and rely on Netflix for entertainment). We were also getting some random movies on channels that were usually "not available."

We realized, after seeing movies cut out during the credits, and seeing them fast forward inexplicably, that we were getting movies that other people had ordered "on demand." Unpredictable and random. We wondered who was watching SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, and who was watching WORLD TRADE CENTER and fast forwarding through all of Nicolas Cage's dialog scenes.

My wife noted that it was quite like the episode of "Friends" where they discover free porn. My wife left the room, and lo and behold, I came across some porn. (Very, very bad, fake-looking porn, the kind you might get in a nice hotel room that wants to have it both ways).

Two night's later we were going to watch the new PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN movie, from Netflix, but my wife had ordered the original one. Later that night, we came across the newer movie "on demand," which was another nice coincidence.

So by my calculations, we've used up two of our three wishes. I'm thinking of holding out for a Fassbinder marathon......
