Happy Victory Day!

May 09, 2011 18:17

May 9th 1945 USSR officially announced end of the World War II and its Victory.  Every year we celebrate this day because every family in the former USSR was impacted by this war in one way or the other; probably not only in USSR but in other countries too.

My grandmother on my mom’s side she fought in this war and was wounded.  The huge scar or I would say a big gap in her calf on her leg always reminded me that she was fighting in the war.  As a child I was so proud of that!  The family from my dad’s side evacuated out of Kiev and their life was not easy.  My dad was only 1 year old when the war begun.

This year, this holiday brings pain to the fresh wound.  One of our closest veterans, Boris’ grandfather had passed just a few months ago.  He went through the war from day one to Berlin in 1945 and in the middle of the war got stuck in Leningrad siege.  He lived to 95. It is painful to think that we can never visit him or call him on May 9th to say “happy victory day.” :(

gloom, holidays
