Sent an unaccompanied minor on the plane

Yesterday, I spent pretty much all day at my parents’ house with the kids.  It was the day of my niece’s (9) departure back to CA.  All day my mom was cooking and having guests over.  Her flight was at around 9pm.   My niece made all 4 of her grandparents go to the airport with her.  My parents asked me to go with just in case if they wouldn’t understand something in regards to the process of sending the unaccompanied minor.

Michael also talked us into taking him with.  She had a real entourage at the airport.  The process was simple.  I had to fill out a form where I gave exact address of my sister as it is on her driver’s license and my information.  We had to pay $75 and then only one person could take her through the security check.  All grandparents voted me.

My niece said goodbye to everyone and we quickly went through security check.  This time they had a mix up with the gates.  There were two gates one for Los Angeles flight and the other for San Francisco and on the tickets they switched those around.   Once we saw that our gate said LA, we went for a walk and found the other gate that had her flight information.

We had to wait for the boarding.  At one point she got paged to get to the gate where we gave her ticket and other documents in the envelope to the airport workers.  We were told that she will get on the plane the last, so we can just be in the gate area and wait for everyone to get on the plane.  So, we ended up waiting for about an hour.  It was very cute to spend some time with my niece she told me a lot about her summer vacation, her friends and asked some questions.  Time went by fast for me.  She kept saying that she just likes to stay in MN because all her grandparents are here.

The rest of the entourage was still waiting for me at the airport.  It was getting darker and darker.  The plane was little bit late and after I let her get on the plane with the flight attendant I was told to wait until the plane will get in the air.

Suddenly, the closed door of the gate opened and flight attendant let a couple out.  They were laughing.  They were going to LA and got on the wrong plane.  It is good that they noticed before the plane took off.

Because of that couple, the flight was delayed a little more.  I didn’t mind waiting but I was worried about Michael who usually goes to bed at 9pm.  Eventually, airport worker got message from the pilot that plane took off and they let me go.

As I was walking out of the secure area of the airport, Michael ran towards me like he didn’t see me for ages, like I just arrived on the plane.  It was very cute.
