“I love you,” Lain said, balancing on her toes, sweeping brown hair out of her face. “Je t'aime. Aishiteiru.”
Alice looked up at the girl, seemingly so young and innocent. “That's why I can't forget? Because you love me?”
Lain sat down, looking up at Alice seriously, but the emotion seemed a mockery on her face. “Yes.”
“But...” Alice mumbled, seemingly confused, “you love everyone, you've been connected to everyone... that's what you said”
“But no one's been connected to me,” Lain said simply.
“That's not true--” Alice tried, shaking her head.
“Why do we go to the Wired?” Lain asked Alice, tilting her head to the side with a half-smile.
“To get what we need, I guess,” Alice shrugged, not able to shrug off a disconcerted feeling.
“I didn't need any of them,” Lain said softly, standing up, not quite on level with Alice, even when she balanced carefully on her toes. “But they needed me. So I've been connected with them...”
“But you haven't needed anyone?” Alice asked incredulously. “Lain that isn't true and you know it.”
“I know,” Lain said, smiling. “Because I connected with you.”
