I HATE JOSS WHEDON / JOSS WHEDON SUCKS *

I haven't yet seen Cabin in the Woods. A lot of people have recommended it to me, many of them trusted sources with generally good taste in movies and who have no special love for Joe Whedon. And, you know, I don't want to offend any of you. I know you guys are cool and all, but I've got issues with Joe. Part of it is that I hate popular things

This is what happens when you give a college newspaper writer a column in a big-girl newspaper. Whedon's work in still middle-of-the-road fare, and appeals to dilettante genre fans because it lets them fancy themselves on the high side of the bell curve without actually challenging them, or expecting them to have more than a cursory knowledge of horror movies. For that reason, is it any surprise the movie is called "Cabin In The Woods"? Saying you like Joe Whedon's writing is like saying your favorite musical genre is pop.

The irony here is that these movies ARE stupid crowd-pleasers; it's his brainwashed fans who try to turn it into something more than it is by hand-waving away the bounding cliches from the guy who writes the same characters, dialogue, and plot twists into his each of his stories. Only someone this deluded about their favorite writer, and ignorant of the broader genre, would count this cliche-touting hack as a 'deconstructionist'. Yes, he's such a deconstructionist they already have a name for it when characters "get Whedoned". All his stories read like:

1) lithe teenage girl killing machine bon mots while beating up monsters
2) kill beloved character suddenly
3) profit!

Hey, you know what cliches DO need a good deconstruction? The works of Joe Whedon!

I did love Mulholland Dr. tho.
