web log: Hammett's mapbacks (thank you, wikipedia)

These Continental Op maps are kind of neat. This one takes the too-easy way out (really, for "Blood Money," a closed picture of that one house?) but this one seems to make up for it. If only that last image were bigger.

Apparently Dell had a line of paperbacks called mapbacks, mostly mysteries, with back covers featuring maps of the fictional locales. Which maps I initially found slightly less enticing than the mapbacks' "tantalizer pages," which contained lists of "What This Mystery is About" ("A dead man's VOICE floating on the wind across a lonely, frozen lake ... An encased ACCORDION playing a dead man's favorite song ... A SILVER BULLET molded by a half-crazed man ... Horrible MURDER, apparently unsolvable, of a supernatural origin") and also lists of questions ("Wouldn't you like to know: What a windigo is?")

HORRIBLE MURDER. SILVER BULLET. a lonely, frozen lake. ACCORDION.
