old chinatown , old friends, old habits

saturday, we met my friend deb at the Hang Ah tea room, one of the oldest dim sum restaurant in SF (circa 1920). i brought the entire female mc chan clan just because i could. we ate and talked of movies, actors, directors and the whole process of getting a script to film. i'm happy for deb, she's been working at this for years and it's finally going somewhere. the production company owner loves her work so much that the film (which is very loosely based on myself, my sister and my ex husband) is now signed on for two, possibly three sequels! so weird. though as far as movies are concerned, i suppose it's not real until it's actually filming.

she's really struggled between weeding out shady agents, finding a decent publishing companies and this little doozy of a story:
just before i left my ex husband, deb was living in london on a contract of some sort with a publishing company. she moved there with her long time friend who we'll call "C". one day, i got a call from deb saying she'd been in a horrible accident, was in the hospital, and needed money wired immediately. she knew we'd just purchased a house and i was working a corporate job. i kept asking questions about the accident and wondered why she caled me not her mom. this deb was adamant about not calling her parents. this sounded way too suspicious so i got all the contact info and did exactly what i was not supposed to do- i called her parents. deb's mom took charge from there and i never heard anything about the situation again. years later, when deb got back to the states i found out what happened. the call came while deb was on an extended trip with another friend. when they got back she found her apartment gone, all her possessions gone, the money in her bank account gone and the money from the publishing company (in the tune of 20K) gone. "C", deb's roommate had developed a heroin habit, was prostituting herself and was living on the streets. "C" had sold everything they owned, cleaned out her bank account, and moved in with her dealer boyfriend. it took deb a while to recover but she did eventually.

after deb got her life back in working order she found out "C" had a baby with her dealer bf, was pregnant with her second child when they got into an altercation. he kicked her in her very pregnant belly and she ended up in the hospital. he went to jail and, somehow, she moved back to the US with both kids her life an utter wreck. no one has heard from her since. crazy shit!

most of all, i miss deb's mom and dad! they were the cutest couple. for ythe longest time i thought her dad was her mom's boyfriend and not her husband. i think that's the sign of an amazing relationship! they're both deceased now. he passed away soon after she did, he couldn't take being without her. her parent's story is story is also being made into a film by the british film board; a completely separate project from the one mentioned earlier. deb's mom holds a very special place in my heart. it was she who noticed things weren't right with me soon after i had the kidmonkey and she said something to deb about it. when deb passed along her mom's message something in my head clicked, i knew i had to get out of my marriage. that little bit of concern gave me courage just when i had almost resigned myself to staying in it. i'll always love her fot it.

freaky friends, asshole factor, movies, kidmonkeys, mc chan clan
