Behind Bars?

Somebody enlighten me!

Why spend 10-30 times more for a beer at a bar or pub than you would at home when all you're doing is hanging out with friends that you should have invited over to your place? You get the comforts of home, cheaper liquor, less noise, and total control over the music and TV.

I like nightclubs. The reason I do is obvious to those who attend them as well. Lighting effects, DJs, exposure to music I may not have heard before, big dance floor, socialization with cool people who wouldn't be there if they didn't like the same kind of music I do, and sometimes getting to dress up or dress down or go in costume for theme parties.

At a bar, you sit around, talk with your friends, drink overpriced alcoholic beverages, listen to what's on the jukebox, watch what's playing on the tube (usually sports), and maybe play pool if the bar has a table. What other choices do you have?

If I'm going to go support my local bartender, I'm going to require more options than that. And I don't want to have to drop a dollar every time I want to hear music I like instead of what the drunk idiot next to me keeps choosing over and over again. I don't have that much to talk about with my friends that I can't say at home or over a nice dinner at Chili's.

I have friends who PREFER these dives over a nightclub...even my siblings! I just don't get the attraction at all. And trust me, I've frequented every type of bar, pub, tavern and pool hall America has to offer. Why is it so hard to get a bar-hopper to go with me to a nightclub?
