MySpace deletes web site for atheists and agnostics

Feb 02, 2008 00:40

This article describes how MySpace discriminates against atheists and agnostics.

Some snippets from the article:

"For the third time in three years, what may be the largest group of organized atheists in the world is struggling to stay on MySpace, said a Cleveland State University assistant professor who founded the site for nonbelievers. MySpace ( Read more... )

I've read about this elsewhere. Whether or not any of this is the fault of Christians is conjecture. Christians, after all, have been clamoring for years now for myspace to clean up its ads, to no avail. It would be very odd for them to suddenly eliminate an atheist group on their account.

Of course, neither can I know for certain whether Myspace's action was entirely without warrant. But if unwarranted, this does raise some legitimate concern. If done at the instigation of Christians, this is doubly troubling. I have added regrets that similar acts borne in contempt of Christians are likewise not uncharacteristic of the sorts of things seen in the academic world.

Atheists are hated more than advertisers. Plus they pay more.

I hope MySpace get their just desserts over this.

Some may feel theists' methods at reaching people are a bit patronizing, though at least (ideally) they have others' interests in mind. Most of the time among ordinary Christians, for example, they'll discuss with others their concern over their unconverted friends and family.

But as a theist, I've become accustomed to seeing frequent signs of derision and contempt for theists and the things they hold dear. Of course this fosters reciprocal resentment and distrust. I've come to learn a lot about the world just by realizing that people.... are human beings.

I would think that a cop, just by putting on the uniform; or a teacher, just by assuming his or her role in class... would be 100% objective and neutral in their treatment of other people because, after all, they're supposed to be... no matter how obnoxious I am to them. Of course, imagine my surprise when they allow their human side to influence that objectivity.

It is both amusing and sad how commonly humanity escapes blame, unless they're helping out homeless people.

Later.

I'm having a hard time believing this one as well. There are plenty other sites, Richard Dawkins Myspace, The Rational Response Squad amongst others who are still holding strong on Myspace.

I don't know if it is true or not. All I know is that I had a MySpace page for less than a week before it was deleted, and I was a member of that group. This was back in early December. If it is true, this kind of crap just makes me more cemented in my disbeliefs.
