thought of the week

Just in case this Buffyish news hasn't filtered down yet, Joss Whedon is scheduled to guest star on Veronica Mars in the 6th episode of the season. Yeah. Kevin Smith in the 2nd, Joss Whedon in the 6th. They're stuntcasting their pretty little hearts out over there. And yes, this is the show that had Paris Hilton on in their 2nd ever episode and managed to survive. Bring in the Buffy-viewers.

I complained a lot about the Emmys, but I didn't really praise the stuff they managed to get right.

Done.

Okay, seriously now. Tony Shaloub for Monk was a good enough choice. Whenever I watch that show (and I've begun watching it more), I enjoy his performance. The Daily Show makes me laugh, so I'm fine with their awards. Far and away the award I felt the voters nailed perfectly was the writing award for the "Three Stories" episode of House. It was simply the best episode of a very strong season for that show and absolute proof that even if you know what happens, it's the way the story is told that really matters.

Overall, the entire show felt just flat to me, but it had its moments. The reading of the nominees for the writing awards for the musical/variety show (which is really 95% of the time late night shows) were brilliant, especially one Conan Christopher O'Brien's. Hands down, the best acceptance speech was from S. Epatha Merkerson. Who? She's best known as Lt. Van Buren from Law & Order, Original Flavor, but won for I think actress in a miniseries/tv movie/whatever they lump in. She stored her acceptance speech in her cleavage and had a big problem when she won and it slipped down the front of her dress, becoming unaccessible.

The best I can hope for is that they'll nominate truly great shows, actors, writers and performances next year, but I know that some of the brilliant lower-profile types will inevitably be overlooked.
