“I should have known when you didn’t come back.” Jake shook his head, rubbing his hands over his face as if to make the thoughts disappear, but they wouldn’t. He felt physically ill, knowing that he didn’t stand his ground when Heather had gone to New Bern. He had wanted to tell her that he needed her with him, that he couldn’t do it alone, and then she’d disappeared and he hadn’t even gone looking for her.

“Listen, I made my own decision, I didn’t know either that Constantino would turn out to be a madman,” Heather shrugged, uneasy at seeing Jake upset like that, “That part really came out of the blue, but end is well, all is well.”

Not for the first time, Jake looked at her in admiration. The way she stayed calm under pressure, how she naturally seemed to forgive him for every mistake he couldn’t forgive himself, it was something he’d forever be thankful for.
“I failed you,” he croaked, his throat feeling so dry he coughed. It was Heather’s turn to shake her head, as she turned around and got him a glass of water from the kitchen.

“Here,” she gave him the glass, “Drink this.”

“Why are you so good to me?” Jake’s wry smile made her pause before she answered.

“Because those voices that keep telling you you’re not good enough, are wrong,” she simply said, “Whatever you have done, you’ve redeemed yourself, Jake. You’ve saved all of us at least once, and yet you still don’t see yourself as the person I see, and that’s a shame.”

Seeing his trembling frame, she walked up to him and pulled him into her embrace. Standing there until the stopped shaking, she still didn’t let go, but rather gently guided him to her bedroom. He didn’t protest when she told him to strip, and silently joined her under the covers, where he could feel her skin against his, and know that she was safe now.
