Suddenly, the world stood still.
For a moment, there was no war. There were no decisions to make and there was no enemy at the gates, ready to take the city and more importantly, its provisions, to leave them die.
First, they took Heather from him, and now New Bern struck again, taking his father. It was almost more than he could take, but there was Eric, who looked up at him for the first time in his life, and the legacy of his father and grandfather he had to carry on.
So Jake squared his shoulders, and let himself grieve for a moment, and everyone outside understood what had happened. He couldn’t let himself go - despair was not something he wanted to read on their faces. Not right now. Now was the time to truly show what he was made of, and make his father proud, now more than ever. And he would.
