It was over.
Now that her little pie was out of the oven, Chuck felt a great many things. Exhausted was at the top of the list, followed by happy and content with a overwhelmed somewhere further down. Laying on a bed in the clinic, she kept drifting in and out of sleep. It had been quite a lot of work. Work that was worth an awful lot, but work nonetheless.
Still she felt a little bit empty. Like something was missing. It could be the fact that her mother and father were not there to witness the happy arrival of their grandson or the fact that Ned's parents were not there either. It could be the fact that it was hard to roll over (she was simply too tired) and the lack of the steady kicking in her abdomen tugged at her heartstrings.
Shifting in the bed, she opened her eyes and looked at the tiny bassinet that held her son.
Her son. She liked the sound of that.
A smile was still on her face when she saw Alex enter the clinic. Lifting a tired arm, she waved towards the girl. "Come on in. Say hello."
That was another thing that had been missing: another part of her little family. Now that Alex had arrived the girl named Chuck felt a bit better about the whole thing.
