The facts were these: having reached the age of thirty when the statistics and usually believed realities of life and death would argue to the contrary was quite an accomplishment. A promise made to Chuck was a promise kept, and Ned made sure Digby and Pigby fell in line. They spent the morning with him as he baked a special birthday pie for Chuck, and sat still as Ned found a nose and antlers for Digby, and a little beard for Pigby.

They undoubtedly made a strange procession as they made their way home (Digby held his head high, trying to keep what little dignity he had left), but it was for a good cause. The best, in fact.

Ned was hardly surprised when their return to the hut found it transformed, with Chuck moving about like the little Christmas elf he was sure she might have been in a past life. "I'll never underestimate your decorating prowess again."

Catching sight of the seasonally dolled up animals caused the girl named Chuck to let out a shriek of excitement. Rushing over to give all three of them praise, she left a trail of tinsel in her wake.

"Oh you really did it!" she exclaimed with a grin, feeling a bright light come to warm her sweet spot. "Oh thank you all so much. And you shouldn't. I am a master decorator."

"Happy birthday," Ned announced, pleased at Chuck's reaction. He knew Digby and Pigby were as well, though they would probably do their best to hide it.

"We made you a birthday pie," he added, holding up the covered dish he was still carrying. "Well, I made it. Digby and Pigby snoozed under the table, but they helped in spirit."

"It's the thought that counts," Chuck agreed with a little nod. Bouncing slightly as she made her way over to Ned, she reached over and gave him a hug. It was nice to be able to celebrate this birthday with someone, let alone a someone she could touch.

"Awh, thank you. I like that, starting a new decade with birthday pie."
