Summary: Tegoshi came out of the closet and might feel something from someone. But who?

It was surprising that practical things and the relationships within the band didn’t change at all when Tegoshi finally solved a problem that had been bothering him for a long time by coming out of the closet.
He did it in his no-nonsense, untactful style right in the middle of practice and the only one to be so shocked as to spit out his mineral water was Shige. Massu, having been Tegoshi’s best friend for a while, had realized something was up a while ago, but had wisely stayed quiet. Yamapi took the news calmly and after a little internal fight, he had decided to not say a thing to the executives at JE. Koyama had promised to support Tegoshi come hell or high water, while Ryo… Well, Ryo hadn’t even rolled his eyes at Tegoshi’s big news, but that surprised nobody.

Naturally their moments together in changing rooms and showers had become quieter than before and just a fraction more tense, but nobody could be blamed for that. Although every boy made sure not to let their towels slip from the waist or and kept their eye contact to a minimum so as to avoid misunderstandings, the band’s youngest member wasn’t abandoned for such an intimate detail. Tegoshi remained the same talkative, selfish part of the NEWS he had always been.

During the last few weeks their calendars had been crammed full and their band practices unusually hard due to their upcoming concert. All the flutter had eaten most of their free time, and their usual nights out together had become more and more rare. When their trainers and managers released them from a hard days’ work, each boy headed straight to bed for a few spare hours’ sleep without complaint.

The aroma of sweat spreading forth from the idols after practice would have made anyone retreat from the room as fast as possible. The siren call of shower made the boys disrobe quickly, and the naked sprint to the showers resembled a competition from the Olympics more than a civilized beeline. There were five showers but six members.
Having lost the competition, Shige leaned to the wall hands crossed, towel tightly on his hips. Ryo, who normally washed quickly, smiled to himself and decided to enjoy a long shower for a change.

“I’m getting cold! Isn’t anyone ready?” Shige complained and seemed to shiver a bit. The sweat from the practice had dried into a chilling layer on his skin and raised goosebumps on his arms and legs.

No-one apart from Ryo seemed to be ready. Shige snorted and fluffed his hair irritatedly. Ryo wouldn’t give up his shower for him.

“I’m ready!” a voice shouted out from the furthest corner.
“Eh? Tegoshi?”
“Yeah! I’m fresh and invigorating again!” the youngest singer announced and turned the water off.
“Tegoshi, people aren’t called invigorating,” Yamapi said while lathering his head with shampoo. Tegoshi paid no attention to him, smiling at Shige like the sun.
“I didn’t sweat as much as the rest of you! I’m in such great shape!” His boasts only received a tense silence. “It’s OK, Kato-kun, go ahead.”

Tegoshi moved away from the shower and gave a doubtful Shige a friendly pat on the shoulder. Shige jumped and switched places with Tegoshi to get under the hot shower. Tegoshi remained in the room, drying himself.

“Tegoshi,” Shige said quickly. “Why are you standing there? Go dry off in the dressing room, the air is so humid in here.”

Tegoshi just shrugged and smiled.

“I’m waiting for you.”

“You don’t have to! You’ll just get all wet again! We’ll be coming right after you anyway!”

“It doesn’t matter, I’ll wait for you.”

Shige felt uncomfortable, and he couldn’t help spitting out his thoughts about Tegoshi’s motives before his brain caught up with his mouth.

“The rest of us are straight! Don’t try to peek!”

Tegoshi looked surprised and hurt. He opened his mouth to tell them that his homosexuality hadn’t turned him into a sex-crazed pervert who’d peek at his friends, but Koyama was quicker.

“Shige-chan,” he exclaimed. Shige immediately regretted his words, but was too proud to apologize for admitting what had been bothering him.

“But he could be! I feel really uncomfortable, when I know that someone might...”

“Don’t worry, no-one’s looking at you,” Ryo sneered.

“You strut around on the stage almost every day in front of thousands of fangirls, and that doesn’t bother you,” Yamapi said sensibly to cover Ryo’s words.

“It’s different. Girls are nice. Tegoshi is…”

“Tegoshi is our friend!” Koyama exclaimed loudly, almost angrily. Everyone turned to look at him in surprise. Koyama never raised his voice to his best friend.

“And a guy…” Shige muttered, but lowered his eyes with shame.

Koyama looked incharacteristically hurt and opened his mouth to reproach his younger friend, but Tegoshi reacted faster. He smiled gently. Some of the band’s members noticed that behind the gentleness his smile was slightly stiff.

“It’s all right, I get it. Kato-kun, if it makes you feel better, I can wait outside. It doesn’t matter.”

Shige swallowed and tried to calm his conscience that was shouting out of guilt. Tegoshi turned around on his heels and stomped out of the room.

Sitting on the dressing room bench alone, Tegoshi had time to wonder whether his sexual orientation was a bigger problem to his friends than he had thought. He was happy that none of them had cast him aside, but he couldn’t help thinking that maybe he should have been a little more discreet. For him it had only been a huge relief, never a problem, and he had been too excited to figure that maybe some people wouldn’t feel the same. Maybe he should have just…

“Tegoshi?”

It was Koyama. Tegoshi raised his eyes to meet his friend’s worried face.

“Yeah?”

“I’m sorry for what Shige said. And he’s sorry, too. He didn’t meant that..”

“That I’m a guy?” Tegoshi asked slightly amused, forcing a smile on his face. “But I am. Sorry, I didn’t think…”

“It doesn’t matter! Shige was the one that didn’t think,” Koyama exclaimed almost desperately. Tegoshi was surprised at his tone, but remained silent. “Of course we were all surprised, but it doesn’t matter. You’re still… You’re still our friend. Our… Our Tegoshi.”

Tegoshi lifted his face and a real, warm smile spread across his features.

“Thanks, Kei-chan,” he said. “You’re right.”

Koyama felt his heart jump with joy, but he didn’t have the time to think why, because the others returned to the dressing room. Shige looked genuinely sorry and smiled shyly at Tegoshi. Tegoshi responded with a smile, and Yamapi decided to change the topis.

None of them could be called a fast dresser, and even after fifteen minutes they were still securely behind the dressing room’s locked doors, drying themselves. Setting a foot outside badly dressed and only half styled was always a risk, because the members of the popular band were recognized easily with or without sunglasses. And to some of them, looking good at all times was more important than to others. Tegoshi was especially fascinated by it.

“Would someone like to dry my hair?” he asked and waved the hairdryer cheerfully as if expecting that at least three people would jump at the chance to fluff his blond hair. Unfortunately each of the band members had already gotten tired of Tegoshi’s hair, and the cheerful question was followed by an awkward silence. Tegoshi felt disappointment knot his stomach, but he didn’t let that stop himself. He did his best to cover up the stiff smile that followed swallowing his feelings, but he fooled nobody.

Koyama, who was already dressed at least in general, stepped up to Tegoshi.

“Tegoshi-kun, let me.”

Tegoshi’s smile brightened again, and he gave Koyama the hairdryer. When Koyama saw Tegoshi smiling at him in the mirror, closing his eyes when the hot air blowed to his face only to open them again to meet Koyama’s eyes, he felt the familiar butterflies flutter in his stomach.  The winged things seemed to only grow more restless instead of leaving him alone. Tegoshi’s hair was beautiful, his eyes bright and all in all, he was a fresh and enchanting creature. Koyama tried not to think about it, but the more he tried to more it bothered him. Every time he lost himself to the youngster’s neck and narrow shoulders, the butterflies flapped their wings more and more. His last crush had been a long time ago, he barely remembered how it felt, but as he played with Tegoshi’s hair he thought that the feeling must be close to how he felt now.

“Kei-chan,” Tegoshi said.

“Hm?”

“It feels nice when you touch my hair like that.”

Koyama swallowed, a hot wave wooshing over him and a slight flush spreading to his ears. He contented himself to just a smile and a nod. His last crush had been a really long time ago, his last relationship even longer. He needed love, missed it so much that he was getting attracted to their badn’s youngest member. That had to be it. That had better be it…

“Kei-chan?” Tegoshi repeated after a while. Koyama chuckled again. He felt as if they had been in their own little world. Like everyone else in the room had totally disaapeared…

In fact…

“My hair’s already dry. Thanks for helping me,” Tegoshi said and jumped out of the current of hot air. “Everyhone else has already gone. Weren’t you supposed to catch the last train?”

“Oh no! Thanks for reminding, Tegoshi-kun! I have to run!”

Koyama grabbed his coat and ran out of the dressing room pulling his shoelaces. There were only eight minutes left to the train’s departure, but suddenly he felt that a little run and the cool night air would do him good anyway.

After Koyama ran from the room Tegoshi figured he was alone. During the hair-drying operation he hadn’t paid any attention to anything else except the hot air that had drop by drop made the water evaporate from his hair. The others had used their chance to say bye to each other and slip out, leaving Tegoshi and Koyama together. Tegoshi couldn’t be sure of it, but he felt as if Massu had given him a questioning look via the mirror before leaving.

Without the others the room looked empty and cold, and it felt much larger than it had before. Tegoshi wasn’t the type of person to like being alone, and the the dark corners and rows of lockers made the hair on his neck stand out. Ghost stories told in high school started coming back to him, and he started to hum to dispel his fears.

Soon the familiar tunes turned into words and melodies, as Tegoshi sang his favourite songs to make the ghosts lurking in the shadows and lockers disappear. If his voice couldn’t do it, nothing would, he thought with pride.

The first song Tegoshi knew by heart, and which he decided to sing with all of it once he’d started, was Ai Nante. It had been a great honor to get to do a love ballad as a solo project, and even greater had been the chance to do sing it with Ryo and Shige. Tegoshi’s own, clear voice mixed in with the others’ lower, melodious tunes had sounded so beautiful, that it almost had raised tears into his eyes. The lyrics hadn’t touched him personally, as he couldn’t claim he had ever walked painful roads or shivered in anyone’s embrace, wondering about the meaning of love of missing anyone. When it came to love, he was still a child. But the words had sounded noble and awe-inspiring, and he was sure than in a way, they were true.

He sang Shige’s part in his own style, as he had done in the solo version, but when he got to Ryo’s verse he heard someone join the song.

Ryo’s voice made him jump on his feet and turn around as if he couldn’t believe what he had heard. Ryo stood there, hands in his dark jeans’ pockets, with a smirk on his face. Tegoshi got mixed in his words and Ryo stopped as well.

“Ryo-chan!” Tegoshi exclaimed. His voice as a notch or two higher than usual. “You game a start! I thought I was totally alone.”

“Do you always sing alone?” Ryo asked and cocked his head. The dark fringe fell on his eyes, but he swiped it to the side in a nonchalant gesture.

“Ahm… Not always,” Tegoshi said, embarrassed, and flushed.Ryo had taken him completely by surprise. “I thought everyone had already left. Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I was in the washroom,” Ryo responded in a slightly jeering tone, as if he had just revealed the most simple fact in the world.

“Okay…” Tegoshi muttered and nodded.

He didn’t chat with Ryo often. Already since forming the band he had liked more being with people his own age, and Ryo’s arrogance hadn’t made him easy to get familiar with. Times had changes since then, and Ryo had turned out to be a human after all, even pampering Tegoshi at times, but they still weren’t very close. All in all, Tegoshi felt that Ryo was much above him, and that was a lot considering the youngster’s proud and self-confident personality.

Tegoshi thought Ryo had clammed up into his shell again, when the older boy decided to continue the small talk.

“You sing pretty well,” Ryo noted.

“Really?” Tegoshi’s face brightened visibly, and his eyes sparkled. “Thank you! I’ve practiced a lot these last few weeks. My trainer said that my voice could hit the higher notes, so I’ve worked on it more than normally. Can you hear it?”

A small smile rose on Ryo’s face, and he chuckled. Tegoshi looked at him bemused. Had he said something funny? Ryo seemed to read his mind.

“You’re funny,” Ryo said and pulled his black leather coat on. It made Tegoshi even more confused. ‘Funny’ wasn’t the adjective they usually used about him.

“Funny?” he repeated and smiled, unsure if he should be amused or thankful. Ryo only nodded, and refused to reveal more of his thoughts.

In a couple of strides Ryo came to Tegoshi, and before the blond could ask a single surprised question or even look at the older boy, Ryo had raised his hands and tousled Tegoshi’s hair until it was a complete mess.

“Eh?” Tegoshi asked intelligently. Ryo grinned.

“Dress up so you won’t get cold,” he said and turned his back to Tegoshi to leave him alone. At the door he peeked at Tegoshi who stood in the moddle of the room in a daze. Ryo smiled.

“And don’t worry about what Shige said. He’s an idiot.”

And with that, he was gone.
