Vacation-Induced Nostalgia

Sep 04, 2014 22:41

I just got back from vacation.

I wish I were still on vacation!

My friend Linda, who owns Bender’s dad and two brothers, came to visit me in Portland in early August, and on August 22 we packed up our six dogs in two cars and hit the road back to Utah.

I was in serious need of a vacation. I don’t have the luxury of a lot of vacation time so didn’t get to take much time off while Linda was in Portland, so I was really looking forward to my two weeks away from the office.

I found myself feeling somewhat nostalgic while in my old stomping grounds . . . nostalgic about the people, about the places, and about things that really surprised me.

I miss the mountains of Utah… the Wasatch Mountains, the Oquirrh Mountains, the Uinta Mountains. All of them. Everywhere you look. Near and far.

I miss the vistas. Everywhere you are in the Salt Lake Valley, you know exactly where you are because you can see the entire valley. Wasatch Mountains on the east. Oquirrh Mountains on the west. Valley in the middle. You can see it all.

I miss training agility with my friends and playing with my dogs in places like this…

I miss Bender getting to do sheep herding with his breeder Shauna. This was only his second time on sheep (not counting the un-structured experience on Heidi’s sheep in March).

I miss one-ring agility trials on green grass, under the sunshine.

I miss driving over 80 mph, and still getting passed!

I can still feel the wind in my hair!

I miss pumping my own gas.

Such a simple thing, but so important

I miss thunderstorms.

No actual rain necessary

I miss sunsets over the Oquirrh Mountains

Amazing

I miss my friends, especially these two women…

I miss watching my friends’ puppies grow up.

Pretty little Wilma, just older than Bender, was a gangly, goofy puppy last time I saw her.

I feel bad that Bender doesn’t get to grow up with his brother Tolt. At least they get to see each other every now and again.

Two peas in a pod

This… I miss this.

How absolutely perfect is this?

I’m not sure I miss all the flags, but I really NOTICED them. Flags… BIG ASS FLAGS… everywhere.

That is a big ass flag

But when I caught my first glimpse of Mt. Hood on my drive back to Portland, I felt like I was coming home.

But I don't miss Idaho...

Potatoes and bloody bugs. Yikes.
