Is an Evil Genius and I want to have his Writer Babies.
Yeah, I just finished "Mr. Monster," which is the sequel to "I Am Not a Serial Killer," which just came out in the US not too long ago, and which you need to buy and read yesterday. "Mr. Monster" is out in the UK but not the US, but I live in the same state as Dan and he was at CONduit, so I have a copy and you don't unless you were there too.
Anyway, it points up something I've said about ratcheting up tension before, to wit:
We can be afraid of what's going to happen to a character. That can hit us where we live and make us want to snuggle them like whoa. But what really makes us afraid? Is what that character will do when pushed to the very limits of his endurance. That right there is what keeps us up at night and keeps us turning pages. The Good character shoved headfirst into doing an Evil thing.
And Dan hits that note, not once, not twice, but several times in this book. He had me going "OH JOHN" and simultaneously wanting to hug John and run away from him very fast.
