The only way I managed to cope with "Agnes Grey" was to treat it as a historical document, as another glimpse into the perspective of a governess in the Victorian era (despite all of the faults you listed above). I also agree with your assertion that she's fascinated by Rosalie, but has absolutely no idea how to turn that tale into one more morally acceptable.
I'm so glad to see that I agree with you, my dear scholar! I think I may enjoy Charlotte Bronte's Villete the best of all the Brontes' works, but Anne was clearly a talented writer. I just get so frustrated with the constant religious moralizing!
