Concert review: Pinback

Oct 29, 2008 16:48

Pinback played at the Showbox last week. Not being able to find anyone who'd heard of them, I went by myself.

The forces behind Pinback both sing and play guitar, interweaving melodic lines and riffs to startling effect. Their writing is very tight, their subject matter kinda geeky. It's a very precise form of indie-rock.

The lead singer sings a baritone that sounds a bit like Beck, and the backup sings up high (though he at times struggles in that range in concert), giving them a needed dynamic range that makes more than the sum of its parts. The guitars thwap a bit and are ever-so-slightly sterile, but lend to that great feeling of precision you get listening to them. But they sound warmer than, say, Robert Fripp.

I absolutely love both of their albums that I've gotten from ZunePass, Summer in Abaddon and Autumn of the Seraphs. In concert, a handful of the songs come off a bit soundalike. They're sort of in-between 'opening band' and 'headliner' in the sense that they don't have quite enough stunners to round out a whole concert, but are far better than your typical opening band.

If Pinback interests you, check out some songs. I recommend Non Photo-Blue, Torch, Good to Sea, and Sender.
